• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Greetings,

I have a whack of donated HT1250s that were programmed to my needs initially, but now I want to update the programming.

I am not looking for links to free software, key hacks, or anything like that
. I'm just interested in info on how these are programmed.

I found a free download on Motorola's site for what appears to be a web-based programmer requiring a dealer login, but it looks like it's all newer radios.
  • What software is actually used for these radios? Is it specific to this model, like with Kenwood and Icom, or is there one that's common to a range of models?
  • I assume direct from Motorola is the only avenue to obtain it legitimately? They're pretty old radios.
  • What cable does it need?

You need the Motorola Professional Radio Services CPS and the specific programming cable. You can obtain both of those items from Bluemax 49ers. Unless you can find the wideband entitlement key, you will be regulated to narrowband programming only.

The place to go for HT1250 info is W9CR's wiki page:
W9CR's wiki site

The place to find all the software info you might need is the same site, but if you only want to do basic frequency and pl programming, it's probably way too much.

If you just want the basics, look for an older software pkg that still allowed for wideband programming. I believe it would be the Professional Series CPS version 6.12.05

Thanks. All but a few of the channels we use are narrowband anyway, so that should be alright. Mostly I want to update the keys and options on the radios, and add a couple of channels.

Fascinating stuff on that page... kinda reminds me of doing the bit math for Commodore 64 assembly programming ;)

You can’t get the software anymore from Motorola so download it from w9cr. Use 6.12.05 and don’t have to worry about wideband key.

FWIW … ive downloaded some time ago the 6.12.05 version from W9CR Waris page, and can confirm that i’m (re)programming my VHF HT1250 with ham repeater frequencies for my province, quite often, and no problems encountered, everything is 25KHz as needed.

Nope. Find the second to last release of Pro series CPS and you're golden. Even if it was programmed with final release.
