News/rumor is trickling out today that the hump at CSX Avon Yard in Indianapolis will be closing soon and will be replaced with flat switching.

Latest word. . .

Avon is closing completely except for the intermodal yard. All yard work is being done at Hawthorne and others.

And in even more obnoxious news, CSX is moving all dispatching back to Jacksonville. Guess the first failed experiment didn't teach them anything; survivability and redundancy apparently are less important than quick profits for the 1%.

Yeah, I heard about both of these items from an acquaintance last week. Sad news. OTOH, change always makes things interesting for railfans.

The Indianapolis dispatchers currently work out of a building at 31 E. Georgia St. (Pennsylvania & Georgia, across the street from Bankers Life Fieldhouse). That's been a railroad office building for as long as I can remember. I worked in that building in the Freight Agency, Timekeeping, and Crew Dispatching. I wonder what will happen to it.
