    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

    This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

We are using LTR SYSTEMS from EF Johnson & Kenwood.These systems are being used independently at various locations.Now we want to have a single system in which LTR repeaters from kenwood and EF Johnson can coexist.

Can anyone help me by clarifying that such a hybrid system is possible?If yes then how to go about it?We understancd this should be possible because the LTR protocol is open.

Yes with a lil creative reprogramming of the system, and coordination with the Communications Governing Organization of your area to reflect any changes in name/ownership etc.. You can make a multiple system into one large linked system. If the systems are all iether Passport, or Standard (Net), then this can be done. If any of them is Multinet... then it would require an complete switchover. If you have Passport, it can support Standard TG's etc.... But Standard can't support Passport. So you can have say two Standard sites, and a Passport site, and have the Units that use Standard operate on the Passport site. It is much simpler if all the sites are of the same type though.

There are no issues of govt./ownership , as both the systems belong to us.Both systems are LTR only.We do not want to integrate two independent sytems ,one from EF Johnson and other from Kenwood instead we want to create a single LTR System using some Kenwood LTR repeaters and some EFJ LTR repeaters.

If this is possible, please educate us on the litte creative reprogramming of the system.

All you have to do is do some reprogramming of the system so that all your HT's/Mobiles and repeaters all operate on the same protocols-

It doesn't matter what Brand Name the stuff is.. If its all LTR Standard, then all you need to do is reprogram all the sites so they use the same TG's etc.

Example:

I have three sites...
1: Uses an EFJ repeater and mobiles/ht's
2: Uses an Tait Repeater and Kenwoods
3: Uses Motorola gear

I program all them to use the same TG's and affiliate on one network. All you have to do is manually switch between sites as you enter each's area of operation.

Thus say my dispatch TG is 0101045... This will be the same no matter which site I am on.. just have to switch to the Home Repeater in use of each site manually, and the system handles the rest. In this respect all TRS's work the same basically. LTR's have to switch sites manually, where as Motorola's and M/A-Com's do it usually automatically upon reciept of the CC.

I think you need to ask this question where there are more people who build and maintain systems.

You can use a mix of any LTR capable equipment. If its LTR compatable, all you have to do is go into the programming of the equipment. To compare- On a Motorola ASTRO-25 System, you can use any APCO-P-25 compatable equipment. You can use EFJ HT's, Motorola Mobiles, etc... Its all in how you program it. The same applys for an LTR Standard System. You can use ANY compatable equipemnt if its programmed properly.

I think he is talking about infrastructure (The repeaters).

If so I think they have to be cabled together.

I do not know if the hardware and/or software interfaces are the same at that point.

He needs to ask someone who manages these systems.

As long as its LTR compatable, it matters not what company makes your repeaters, your HT's, or Mobiles.... As long as you have them all programmed for the same system, and have the repeaters linked, then you are good to go. As to exactly which method to use to link it all, and the specifics of programming that I can't tell you for sure as many different methods are used.

I have an LTR system that is running both Kenwood and Motorola repeaters at the same site, (using an NTS PassPort controller). It does not matter who makes the repeaters as they are not connected together, it is the controllers that are.

I do not know if the different manufacturers of LTR controllers are compatible or not, but I would think that those are the only thing that you need to worry about. In other words, if the Kenwood and EFJ systems are all using Trident controllers, you should be fine combining the different repeaters.

What if it is pure LTR without an aditional controller?

Will the repeaters talk to each other?

Yes, it is a pure LTR repeater system without a central controller.The Kenwood LTR repeater consists of TKR900 Repeater,Trident Contoller and Power Amplifier whereas the EF Johnson repeater is a composite one consisting of various cards like MPC,MAC,IAC,PSU and PA.

Now confirm whether a Kenwood repeater and EFJ repeater can coexist in a single system without a central controller.Theoretically speaking it should happen.I am not sure, if it should happen, then how?

You will need to have a central controlling point (Dispatch Center) that has both repeaters linked to it, and both programmed for the one system's protocols (talkgroups, patches etc), and all your mobiles, and HT's reprogrammed accordingly to operate on both as part of ONE system instead of TWO SEPERATE systems. Its not as hard or expensive as say having to totally replace one of them with identical equipment would be.

I would get advice some someone who has had hands on experiance with LTR infrastructure (systems).
You are asking a group that (with few exceptions) does not support radio system infrastructure.
This is a great site, but most here are hobbyist listeners.

For normal LTR, each repeater has it's own controller connected to it. These controllers are connected together thru ports on the back of each one. Then one of the controllers is set to be the "master" to oversee things.

The controllers could care less what model repeater it is connected to.

So the factory installed controllers in different brand repeaters are compatable?

Yep, just like in my 10 channel PassPort system that is running LTR, I have 1 Motorola and 9 Kenwood repeaters at the same site. The only issue I have with running the different repeaters in the same site is that the audio in the Motorola sounds a little deeper than a Kenwood.

Because the Motorola is a "stronger" repeater. Not dissing Kenwoods, or EFJ's.. but Motorolas always seem "stronger" in that aspect.

Sound in FM has nothing to do with "stronger" or Weaker", it has to do with the bandwidth and filtering in the audio paths, and teh acuracy of teh pre-emphasis and de-emphasis circuits.
