Your was "half-baked" but mine must have stayed in the oven longer because it's well-done.

Yes, we all know how awesome the SDS100 is in your view, and that you are now the chief defender of the SDS100's "good name" now that Jon has gone away for a few years. I'm very happy for you and the others who have had such a wonderful experience. Perhaps myself, several people commenting here, and every single person that I did one-one-one comparison testing with (including a Uniden beta tester) just happened to get "half-baked" units, while yourself and a few others got the good ones. Even a broken clock is right twice a day, I'm not doubting you.

Perhaps I was lucky but I've not had any problems with my HP2, 436 or SDS100.

But, okay, I got your point.

I find the audio and decode great on the local simulcast P25. For 800 mhz it is nice. I bought it for when the power is out. My TRX-2 is fantastic and I am sad to report faster to lock on than the Uniden. Because the uniden is a backup for me I don't mind and it is fine to keep me informed during WX emergencies.

I want more battery life though and it does run hot. I am very conservative and will turn it off it it gets too warm. I suspect running it until the battery dies in high ambient temperatures may be a poor idea for longevity.

But I prize it for audio quality and great decode.

It is a nice rig...but it is pricey and the quality does not live up to the cost. I am glad you are happy with yours. Mine is nice too. But for 700 dollars I expect more.

People on the fence should wait a bit IMO. Perhaps the price will fall some. It should. It is a nice scanner...
But less money will in many cases get you what you want.

My first scanner was a Bearcat BC-100 16 channels of epic. I loved it. It cannot be said I am a hater...far from it. But this newest effort lacks in some serious ways. I bought it because I am a fan.

I am less so now. I am fortunate to own many excellent receivers. I am 57 and have been acquiring them for a long time. Of all of them the Icom 8500 is ridiculous in it's performance. Poor as a scanner (too slow +relay switching) it is superior for intercept use. Analog only of course...it is a fantastic receiver. Mine has the 500hz filter installed primarily for cw use on HF/LF. It did very well with a homemade preselector on LF for DXing NDB's. The Icom 7410 is so much better on HF it is criminal...the stuff of dreams.

I am an Extra class amateur operator. And have been a receiver geek for decades.

Thanks for your service OM.

Bought one of the first ones out. It gets warm, but no problem. It's been running 24/7 since buying. I own a ton of scanners and this is the best one.

FYI. This is the Uniden Tavern. As such, conversations in this forum are given a bit more lee-way than the rest of the board.

However, I suggest that folks be very careful labeling other forum posters as Uniden bashers or Whistler shills or Uniden chief defenders. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. And, they are free to express that opinion here within the limits of the forum rules. Play nice.

Good commentary. I bought a 436HP late fall of 2015 and while I am no electronics slouch, I eventually traded it in to Universal and accepted the loss. Just too high of a learning curve, watched some of the You Tube videos but they glossed over things. I liked the GPS option, but for now I will stay with my old school AOR 8200 and manually programming.

Think I will be moving into a Whistler unit sometime in the New Year, just not in a rush.

Think Uniden could do better with more of a user friendly manual. Cannot comment on the SDS 100 and have no desire to get one.

They both have advantages and disadvantages. I find that the Whistler EZScan software is easier and more intuitive to use than Sentinel. But Uniden has the GPS for many of its models, and since I got the you-know-who GPS mods for my 436 and 536 earlier this year, they have been even more fun and versatile. The Unidens do better with Simulcast systems than Whistler models, too. So, I can appreciate both, and I have both.

This is about where I am. I really do not like Sentinel. I can use it but I always wind up with a monster headache. E-Z Scan and Win500 are just a whole lot more intuitive for my brain but I know we're all different so I'm not bashing anyone here. I now just mainly use my 436 with the GPS puck, and it does a nice job with that even if to my ear the GRE/Whistler audio is clearer...really wish I'd sent it to you-know-who and had the chip installed when I had the chance. Not much in the way of LSM in my home area so that's not a factor at this time.

Meanwhile, I have a ancient Radio Shack 8 channel crystal handheld (has air band too!) awaiting repair on my bench. Someone gave it to me because the squelch won't close. Should be a easy fix, just been lazy. Amazing how technology rapidly advances, thank NASA for driving development.

Amazon has and will continue to close accounts with repeated or mis used returns. Purchasing an SDS should not be treated as a " Mattress" for 90 days experience.
With all do respect , if spending $650 is a financial hardship for you, then dont.
Both Apple and Samsung have experienced many issues with their devices, as they are electronics and failure of some is part of the experience.
Thanks,

So who are you to make the decisions on Amazon's return policy and how you feel things should work in the world? This is why Amazon is a multiple billion dollar company and you opinions on their return policy will never change their mind.

This is why companies have this kind of return policy and why my credit card company will back all of my returns due to buying a radio that is not up to my standards when spending 650.00 dollars plus if you buy the extra add-ons. If the radio is not up to standards when my older radios are way a better performer than its going back and I am getting my money back and Amazon and their re-sellers can deal with my radio. It's never been run threw the mud. So it should not matter. Uniden maybe do a better job on their radios then when they keep getting pallets and pallets of radios back as returns.

This is why I never buy from any other retailer anymore like these fly by night web retailers or EBAY. I do not have to deal with any slack on returns. Like it or not but this is the way it is and Amazon will ROCK and keep Rolling why the other retailers will be left in the dust like SEARS.

You know SEARS. Done and Gone forever.

What base model? Let's not start rumors again.

What part of this statement do you not understand?????? The base model has no release date and what I said there are no pictures. There are no rumors here. I never said there is a base model released or there are pictures floating around the internet and a release date on the plate.

"This is why the base model has no pictures or no release date yet."

If you think the radios you now use are better than the SDS100, why would you consider purchasing the 100, regardless of the return policy?

Wouldn't this be a personal decision of me and my money?? Isn't this the beauty of buy and return in the world we live in today. I am pretty sure that everybody does this from time to time with merchandise that they buy and then do not see a need for it. I can pretty much bet my life on that you have done this from time to time in your life time.

Soooo, you don't have an answer. That's OK.

The answer is "I buy an item and work with it. If it does not meet my standards then it goes back. Then I win and move on to the next item until I am happy with the next radio that gives me the warm and fuzzy. The SDS-100 is not making me warm and fuzzy.
