IC-R30 doesn't read SD card

I'm trying to program my new IC-R30 with all frequencies from 6 Oregon counties. There are a lot, so I've bought access to the RadioReference database and loaded the freqs into ARC30. I've formatted a 30GB SD card, inserted it into the radio, and uploaded the ARC30 file to the SD card. Windows shows the card as an external drive and shows the ARC30 file on it. When I select from the menu SD Card > SD Card Info, it says the free space is 30GB; i.e., it's blank. When I try SD Card > Import/Export > Import > Memory CH > ALL, it says "-- No File --". Pressing Enter again produces a beep, but nothing happens.

The procedure I used was from the ARC30 documentation. Is it outdated, so I'm doing something wrong?

The manual is up to date, but there are some SD card limitations in the R30 manual:

81680

Also you can put the R30 in USB mode and then using your PC browse to IC-R30 > Csv > MemoryCh to verify any files are actually stored at that location.

Did you format the card while it was in the radio? The R30 manual (page 5) specifically says to format the card using the receiver.

It won't work otherwise.

All methods of programming a R30 using the SD card are pretty hard to do. You must follow all of the steps and have an open mind on accepting how Icom setup the file system. ARC30 has to play by those rules so it's also unforgiving.

The R30 reads and writes to the SD just fine, so the title of this thread is a little misleading. That's OK, but if you don't understand that, you might be in over your head with this method. If you do, I can supply some example CSV files you can edit in Excel, then import into the R30.

The Icom software and RT Systems software both read and write directly to the R30. SD card not required.

I have had similar problems. I have yet to see any card I have tried have exactly the capacity printed on the card. The files are actually quite small.- With 5 groups of about 60 frequencies each, my card shows a capacity of 29,850.7 and free space of 29,848.2 on a 32 gb card. wa8pyr has what is probably the answer to your problems.

There are several R30 threads in the Icom forum. Browsing through these may help. Using the SD card to program the R30 was a topic shortly after the receiver became available.

Thanks for the reply, Gommert. The SD card I'm using is a microSDHC 32 GB. Using your method, on my PC the card does have on it the .csv file created by ARC30.

Yes, I formatted the card while it was in the receiver, per instructions.

Thanks for the reply, Hit_Factor. I followed the instructions on programming using an SD card pretty carefully, although it was tricky, all right. I did open the ARC30 file in Excel just to have a look, saved the Excel file to my PC, and tried to import it into the R30, but I couldn't find any options to import from the PC, only from the SD card.

You always have to write the file to the SD card, and put it in the correct folder.

The R30 will allow you to mount the internal SD card, or you can manually move the sd card.

Thanks, apperently the R30 filesystem can not handle filenames longer than 20 characters.
So when you rename it to for example Oregon the R30 should import and display the file. I will add an extra check in the next update of ARC30.

Thanks, Gommert, for the quick action. Now if I could just boot up my busted desktop PC, I could access the file to shorten its name :-(
