Has anyone found what changes are made to the one selling on ebay to open them up?

The ones being sold on eBay are not US Models, and are thus unblocked in the cellular range. There is one Japanese source and one Chinese source. The Japanese source's model DOES NOT support APCO-25 digital...there is no connector for the UT-122 board. This has been discussed in GREAT detail in another thread here.

While working on the latest Strong Signals changes, I see that 3 programs now support - in some fashion - the 2500. PCRemote and TrunkPCR are primarily scanning packages in nature, but the third - Shortwave Log - is a very well known package for HF monitoring. It's a great deal more than just a HF broadcast package - it can handle other formats as well. In addition, if you use Ham Radio Deluxe, the 2 programs can interface to one another.

Each of them have their own Yahoo group; if you're interested in one of these, that's where I would start. I've added links to them in the PCR2500 Wiki page at:
