Icom have presented on and displayed IC-R15s, including allowing hands on experiences, at Icom Fair Narayama on 28 November, and will be doing the same at Kiba this coming weekend.
The IC-R15 is definitely coming, the only question is will it go into the US market. Rumour is that Icom are considering only releasing it to the domestic, Asia/Oceania, and European markets only.

HRO is taking reservation orders for the IC-R15:

If they would be willing to include NXDN/IDAS, this would be a slam dunk for railfans too. As it is, I still don't foresee mainline communications going digital any time soon (if ever), but better to have it and not need it. Still though, if the receiver is on par with the R30, it'll still be worth it - my R30 is every bit as good as my NX5200 and XPR7550e for railroad listening, and those two have the best receivers I've ever used for railroad stuff.

Maybe Icom will see how well it sells in Japan before deciding on selling it in the USA. Seems like a good air/rail receiver but sucks no 380-400 Mhz. Heck, if Icom wanted to save some money, they could have disabled transmit on the 52A and add some frequencies. But one problem with the 52A is not all modes are available in all frequencies. Would have kept mine if every mode available covered all frequencies.

IC-R15 is now appearing as a product on the Japanese Icom site, but not the English language global site

From the link:

Icom Inc. will release the USA and EUR versions of the IC-R15 communication receiver around Spring 2024.

The contrast on the R30's display could have been a bit darker, but it's not awful. Having the backlight on all the time is a must (even if just the Dim level}.

The vivid-looking display on the R15 is nice if it doesn't eat the batteries.

Although, stock R30 photos show a vivid display too🙂

Yes the dark screen on the 52 was a bit of a disappointment. It’s a conundrum. It’s a byproduct of the technology used.

The white display is better (I think) but may draw more current. It’s still not very good in direct sunshine. Some other technology for a dedicated receiver like the R15 might be better (Kenwood D74/75 is pretty good).

I backpedalled and have an ID-50A, but I use it primarily as a D Star radio and monitor a couple of local repeaters. Works perfectly for me. Battery life is quite good.

I sold two ID-52’s some time back, never really utilized the features. They are nice radios but not as compact as the ID-50.

Icom doing a Uniden and going backwards in time with new releases. This receiver has absolutely no appeal to me despite the better display which should have been included on the R30.

For those who missed the opportunity to buy the R30...this is their 2nd chance to get a good (by all indications, considering this likely descended from the R30's design) receiver.

Descended from the IC-R30? I don't think so.

IC-R30 Frequency Range: 0.100000−3304.999990 MHz (US cellular bands blocked), Modes: FM, FM-N, WFM, AM, AM-N, SSB, CW, D-STAR (DV), P25, dPMR, NXDN, DCR

IC-R15 Frequency Range: 76-500MHz, Modes: FM, WFM, AM

This is true provided that you are only interested in the frequency range and modes offered by the R15. Descended from the R30 remains to be seen.
