I have an icom V8 whose, initial settings menu does not match the instruction manual. Another odd thing about this radio is the fact that the key beep must beon for squelch to break. Sensitivity seems ok when squelch iscopens. This was an ebay find from japan , That msy be my problem. Also the radio only has20 khz, tuning steps. Whichi canvlive with. The repeater off set always seems to be 75khz. It will go + or minus depending con the setting. I wonder what i have here?

Sounds like you got a Japanese-spec radio. And, it may end up being stuck in Japanese specification.

A few months ago, I obtained an Icom radio from a silent key's estate sale. I did a full reset as described in the manual that I found online. When the radio rebooted from the full reset, the menus were in Japanese. I eventually figured out how to get the menus in English. But, the radio would not tune the North American bands on 70cm. I suspected that it was a Japanese-spec radio so sent the radio to SAR Technical Services in Michigan, which is an Icom-authorized repair shop, hoping that he could change the microprocessor switches to make it North American-spec. He responded that it was, in fact, a Japanese radio and it could not be set for the North American band plan. I ended up selling the radio to him.

There are also a ton of fake China turd fraud Icom V8s. Is it an actual Icom with a hologram label?

(Advisory)
Almost all Type 2 products are counterfeit. It has been a long time since the products were discontinued. Purchase the new models, such as the IC-V80 and IC-2300H (with a genuine hologram label).

Thankyou for the reply. I suspect you are correct, it is a japanese radio. Luckily i didn't pay much for it. I might be able to live with having the key peep on.
