IF the static is being caused by excessively strong signals OTHER THAN the ones you want to receive, then an attenuator can help.

Think of an attenuator as "sunglasses for your scanner". Its cuts down on ALL signals so you don't get blinded by the strong ones.

You probably have a combination of issues. NY is a fairly noise area (think of that as lots of "Glare"), and you are trying to see a dim light a long way away. So, sunglasses on or sun glasses off, or maybe a telescope (directional gain antenna) is the solution.

You don't know until you try.

I didn't realize the distant problem. It could be a toss up here. A preamp could help, but it may also boost the close signals to much and may overload you scanner. I guess you will never know unless you experiment.

A yagi might be an option if you can point it towards the Bronx. The yagi might also pick up the local frequencies OK.

I doubt that you're going to have much luck, even from Downtown Brooklyn or Park Slope to the South Bronx, less if you're further south or he transmitter is further north. Think of Manhattan as this HUGE mountain between you and the Bronx. All the steel cuts the signals way down, you're trying to receive a signal at least 10 miles away with a 5 mile horizon and there's this huge wall of signal from the Battery to about 125th Street. Even tight Motorola receivers have problems in Midtown, and the signal you're looking for has to get through all that.
