• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

You are right. I bought the Cobra 29LX for the car with a Wilson 1000 antenna. Nice rig. Ron
Thanks, Ron! Even with the cussing (only occasional in these parts) I might just get that Cobra rig for the heck of it! The way I see it - CB is what we make it! If two people are using it responsibly then it's worth it! 10-4.

Well over here in Cheyenne Wyoming and Northern Colorado other then truckers we do not have much.
In the oil business we occasionally are required to have CB's in our service trucks on site and some ranches require them.
Most of the 4X4 clubs require them for runs.
As far as SSB use..none I have heard, I mainly hear guys out of California on skip.
no CB shops with-in 100 miles.

Dead as the proverbial door nail, the few remaining antennas aren't connected to anything and the occasional mobile has NY plates on it. BENNIE GO HOME!

"The area of NJ with the retirement communities?"
Not a single one in Seizure Village, they have better things to do in God's waiting room. The area is dotted with active hams though, maybe their presence is telling you something?

4x4 events are the only place I use the CB. How does one go about calling CQ with a cb anyway?

If I remember correctly, back in the day it went kinda like "Break channel [fill in channel number], anybody got their ears on, break break...." or "Break break, anybody got a copy on the [fill in handle], come on..."

Now I think it is in vogue to pick three numbers as your handle and just repeat them over and over and over and end with your location, "123..123...123...123 New York City" However, this may be for SSB more than AM...I guess

The first 'quip' that comes to mind is that the only thing in N.J. worth having is a way out of there. The second one is that almost all CB is worthless. Just listen to some of the users on it!
Having gotten that out of the way, it just depends on what your purpose for using CB is. For entertainment? I think that just depends on your attitude, what you find amusing, or fun. For serious use? Ya'gotta be desperate! And then, who knows what you (or I) might find enjoyable. Try it and see...

I hear some base station activity when I travel down to the Atlantic City area from New York. Not sure about NJ, but some retirement areas in Arizona and Florida seem to have a lot of old CBers still chewing the rag, some on radios that were first built in the '60s and '70s! The NYC area suburbs of Westchester and Long Island seem to have sideband activity on CH 37 through 40 and on the Freeband, as well as AM activity on CH 31, 14, 11, and 6.

I still have one in my truck, while I'm not happy with the cursing and other chatter, I still listen to 19 when I'm on the Turnpike and pick up traffic advisories faster than any radio station...Redlight is on 19

I keep one in all of my vehicles. Can't count the number of times I have avoided traffic pile ups and rubbernecking. Just recently avoided a 2 hour delay on I-95 while police were clearing up an accident scene. Also, you can often find the cheapest local gas stations, motels, and great places to eat just by turning on the radio!

I recently went back on the road in a dump truck in my company. I broke down an put a CB in the truck for talking to the loaders & scale operators in the sand & gravel pits we load at as well as talking to other company drivers when we run together. On the road CB doesn't seem real active ( I'm not on Ch.19 much only when on the NJTP), but here is a partial list of some of the quarries and pits and their channels. It does seems like almost every truck I pass has antennas on it though. Hope this helps.
Trap Rock-Moores Station- Lamberville Ch.10
Trap Rock- Pennington- Ch.8
Stavola- Bound Brook- Ch.27
New Hope, Pa. stone- Ch.20
Belvedere stone- Ch.23
Misc. dump trucks- Ch.17

Alot of Hispanic drivers use either Ch.25 or 30.

Channel 17 is very active in the North Trenton/Ewing area. Listen for Triple Zero. Also I bought a used rig off a guy in Bricktown and he says they have reactivated a fairly large "net' in the Brick/Pt.Pleasant area nighttime. They even hold old fashioned CB "coffee break" meetings.

Things are definitely starting to pick up. Over the last several days the skip activity has started to increase on the band, so the good old "skip shooters" are also returning to the party!
