..This is my first scanner. What should be my expectations of it? I live in a urban neighborhood. Should I be able to listen on a police frequency when the town is 10 miles away? Or is this scanner just not capable of doing the distance?

If your fire/police/ems use VHF and UHF conventional frequencies you should be able to hear them on the 92. Did you try the service search on the 92 to see?
