I had a kenwod R2000 when I was a kid. I thought it was lost after a couple of moves, or maybe packed away somewhere. I haven't seen it in probably 16 years, but I just found it TODAY! Still in pretty good condition and a nice looking radio. I can't wait to try it out. One problem. NO ANTENNA!

Can anyone recommend a really good but realtively low profile INDOOR antenna for the R2000 (I live in a city)? I'm most interested in listening to utilities such as coast guard/miltary/goverment/marine/hurricane hunting stuff.

Thanks and I'll let you know how it performs.

The HF Wiki thread (which is a sticky at the top of this forum) has a section for antennas - go check that out. Here are just a few possibilites (and notice, that some you would need a tuner, others not...)

a. From the Low Noise Recieve only loops site (Loops wiki), there's a simple little 50 foot long loop that oughta be right up your alley - built with coax, no less...

b. The Carpet Loop (found in both the Loops and HF antennas pages...)

c. Normally I wouldn't recommend an active antenna in a city, but this one is so unobtrusive, and it's an inexpensve kit (no less) you just might be able to sneak it into your patio - the North County Active Antenna (HF Antennas)

d. And of course, the PAR EF-SWL - now I know, you're thinking, I can't put that in here - you most certainly can - if you have an attic or crawspace, that might well be ideal. (HF Antennas)

I wouldn't go too overboard with antennas on this radio - if memory serves, like its R1000 brother, it's a bit sensitive to overloading.

By the way, the RadioIntel website shows a web page for the R2000- and there's a suprisingly active Yahoo group for it, too...

Finally I'd consider sending it off to Kiwa and having better filters installed. Good selectivity is an important consideration on any receiver, much more so today then 20 years ago.

The R-1000 was a companion to the TS-430S ham rig. The R-2000 was the companion to the TS-440, I believe. Both where/are great receivers, if you can find 'em. Most who bouight them apparently have hung on to them. I settled for two TS-430Ses for the home shack. They're in use daily; one coupled to the computer via BuxCom Co.'s Rascal interface and the MixW2 software for digital radio and SSTV

No, if memory serves, it was the R5000 that was the companion to the TS430. The R2000 came out WAY before the TS440 did. But yes, both receivers are pretty good for their day - and even better if you improve the selectivity. As mentioned before, it's even more important now then in the past. 73s Mike
