Kenwood: Kenwood TM-V71A 'HELLO' Pops Up on Transmit

Every time I attempt to transmit on my TM-V71A, the word 'HELLO' pops up on the screen and I am unable to transmit at all.
Does anyone have any info to share about this?

Sound like the Power On message. It's supposed to show for two seconds. Manual page references are p. 22 and p. 62.

How is the radio powered? Does it appear to restart when you hit the PTT key?
Are you transmitting within the amateur radio bands?

Don't Kenwood radios also have pretty aggressive SWR protection circuitry? I wonder if the SWR is too high and that causes a reset..?

I wouldn't expect it to power cycle, but just fold power back. I've never seen a V71 power cycle, except when it doesn't have an acceptable power source.

Assuming it's stuck on power up, try a full reset- press F plus power on, rotate dial to full reset. If it's stuck in bootstrap mode, I'd try downloading the latest firmware and see if it can be recovered updating the firmware. This is of course, one is running the radio off a proper power supply with at least 12amps current capability.
