I read in the sales literature that the Kenwood TM-V71A offers a high, medium and low setting for transmitter power. 65 watts for high, 10 watts for med, and 5 watts for low, but does anyone know for sure if those settings can be adjusted/changed to say for example 25 watts, 5 watts and 2 watts?

Thank you,
Doug

That radio advertises power output as 50W, 10W, and 5W. Those are the choices from the front panel/menu. I would not open it open and make "adjustments".

If you're looking for a lower power draw, perhaps use an HT set for 2W and connect it to your antenna.

The Yaesu 400-XDR mobile radio offers 50W, 20W, and 5W. Again, no variable power output adjustment other than those three from the menu.

A Yaesu 817ND can adjust the power pretty low as it is an efficient radio. The output power settings are 5 / 2.5 / 1 / and 0.5 watts. At the 5 watt setting it will draw about 2 amps which is less than half of what a regular mobile radio set at 5 watts would draw.

I recall previously reading a post that suggested that the power output levels of the V71 and the D710 could be adjusted via a procedure detailed in the service manual. That was some time ago but you might be able to locate the post with a search.

Yes, put on a service jumper, can be made from a paperclip. Go into service mode and the powers can be changed in software. Not sure if any other adjustments are required. The power amp may not be real happy if you go below the factory low or above the factory high. This could induce off frequency spikes.

There are several pages in the Service manual on alignment.

All of our Kenwood EOC radios are set at 50, 20, and 12 watts. 5 watts is too low for the final RF amp's spec used in the Kenwood V and D series. Too low of a power setting causes excess dissipation, AKA heat damage to the RF amp.

" The power amp may not be real happy if you go below the factory low or above the factory high. This could induce off frequency spikes. "

Correct, the transmitter RF power amp will NOT be happy. Out of spec power settings DOES affect transmitter spurs., or "spikes", and over dissipation, which can burn up the PA.

I had no intentions on physically opening up the radio to make adjustments. It sounds like I can make the adjustments the same way I did with my 710. Yes the 710 can be adjusted in service mode.

Those power ratings I mentioned such as the 5 watts were EXAMPLES, I was only throwing numbers out as EXAMPLES, 5 watts is not my intended goal. 65 watts was an accidental overlook leftover from my other post that i forgot to change for this post. :)

Also, portable radios are out of the question, same Yaesu, I am a dedicated Kenwood guy.

Thanks guys for your responses, Appreciate it.
