• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I was wondering if anyone would have any advice on buying a KVL keyloader? Looking at a few on ebay that are up for purchase.

Do all KVL's work on any Astro Saber's or Astro Spectra's as well as XTS family? Or is there a specific model for certain radio's?

Any tip's or info is appreciated. PM's welcome.

Thank You.

KVL Advice

I'm normally a "whatever floats your boat" kind of guy, but since you asked for advice....

Save yourself a lot of grief and don't even think about buying a KVL.

I gather from the tone of your question that you are not really in a position where you need to have one, except if you've got it in your mind that you can crack somebody's encryption keys and add them to your radio. You cannot possibly imagine the "stuff" that will rain down upon you if you did that. And don't let anybody kid you or tell you otherwise...you WILL be found.

Take this for what it's worth....

What do you hope to accomplish having one? I suspect that for your purposes, it won't really matter. Just get one. They look cool sitting on the desk.

<sarcasm>"Yep... *thumping chest* >> I << have a keyloader!" </sarcasm>

Since your post history doesn't scream "I wan 2 crack thuz incriptionz!" I'll help some.

The older KVL keyloaders come in different protocol versions. For an average user any will do provided they load the radio. If you want to load ASTRO radios you need a DX version. If you are handy with a PROM burner, or can locate a NOS chip, you can buy an older version and uplift the firmware. I'm speaking from experience with the DES 3011 model. As far as the others go I don't know if it works the same way.

You'll find more than enough info on Batlabs that you won't need to ask any more questions, which if there any the answers will probably be "NO".

T3011DX and KVL3000 load DES (XL/OFB) on Astro and Astro25 (Astro25 needs PID enabled in codeplug)

no other flavor of T3011's work for Astro.

KVL3000+ is required to load AES256 keys. be careful, not all +'s are flashed for AES....

Just an update, by no means do I wish to crack any code. That would be wrong and something I am not interested in given the fact that it is illegal. I really don't feel like I am up for a visit from someone who's code I cracked. On top of that, "why even try something like that"?

I use to have one of those old Keyloaders for the older saber series radio's. I had one that would load in DES. Main reason for having one was for my job.

Anyway, no need to try and crack some code...I own a few Astro Sabers and they have DES-XL and I could use one (Keyloader) again to protect some com's. No big deal.

I just thought I would ask and see what advice if any some might have on buying one. I know much in the radio world of technology has changed and keeps on changing. I read about KVL's and there are some different ones, just wondering what I would need based on my model of Astro radio's.

I appreciate the help and responses. Doubt I will buy one but good to learn about how it all works.

Thank You.

Oops, Sorry!

OK, sorry, didn't mean to cast anybody in a bad light. I jumped to a wrong conclusion based on my perception of your original question. That's what I get for answering posts late at night when I'm tired.

Mea culpa.

To add, if someone really wants to spend the bucks on a newer keyloader, stay away from the KVL3000. Stick with the 3000+. There's no advantage to the regular 3000 unless you'll never need AES and need to handle multiple algorithms.

No problem on barking at me. I take nothing personal. This forum is great to use when trying to learn how this type of technology works. Everyone has an idea to share.

I do have one question...What is the difference between a NTN7395A and one listed as T5795A?

Reason why I ask is that on the Batlabs it only talks about the T5795A where as the NTN7395A is not listed. Is one older than the other or will one only handle certain type's of "keys" and the other something else? Both of these models seem to be the same.

I was wondering the difference? Maybe I overlooked something on the Batlabs website but I think I read through it and did not see the NTN7395A.

Thanx.

Ooops! I think I figured out the NTN side of things. I was not paying close attention to my own email when I wrote it late last night. NTN of course is for a battery.

That is what I get after working a long day.

Maybe my question is more about the model numbers for a KVL 3000 vs a KVL 3000+. Batlabs shows one model number but how do you know the difference between a 3000 and a 3000+?

I think a nap is on order today. Thanx.

For one thing it says "KVL3000 Plus" on the front of it. Another, you will pay four figures for a used one, especially if it is flashed for AES. If it is not already flashed for it don't bother, list price for the AES upgrade is also in the four figures.

unless you have a need for AES or ADP, $250 for a T3011DX is a far more economical option for the hobbiest.

I find it kinda funny that you searched and found this thread, but didn't read the linked documentation in the last post before your reply.
