I talked to a KVE officer yesterday and he said that KVE supervisors were the only ones that were suppose to use the digital KSP frequencies. He was carrying a XTS 5000.

I've heard several calls on 453.3 on my Pro-95 in the past two weeks. These were traffic stops with the unit calling TOC. Several of these gave mile post markers on I-65.

What does the TOC stand for?

I worked a wreck today with an overturned semi truck in which Kentucky Motor Vehicle Enforcement was called. The officer came out of either Hopkinsville or Hopkins county (too busy doing extrication to fully hear).

When the officer arrived, I strolled 8) by the car and noticed only the lo band radio. I asked him when they were switching and he advised that it will be the last part of this year (2005) before this area goes to the 400 MHZ system. I still hear the tower being broadcast on 44.620 and they do have a tower here in Morganfield.

This morning at around 8:45 I heard KSP aircraft 24SP contacting headquarters on 453.3 with destinations and approximate return time. Destinations were Mount Sterling, Hazard and then London for post meeting. Looks like they are still using this along with KVE.

It's still a State Police channel, the "State" channel is how it's marked on the radio display, and it's used mainly by HQ people. But as other posters have said it isn't used much, so it was assigned, I guess you could say, along with surplus radios, to KVE for their units. I don't know what the schedule is for all their guys to have it, but I know some KVE units around Richmond have it installed because I've heard them once or twice when I've been 10-8.

Monitored a chase last night that involved a KVE trooper with KSP and Richmond PD as backup...KVE 520 used the KSP Post 7 digital freq of 460.300Mhz...so at least a few of the KVE troopers in the Richmond area have access to the digital system.

Last night and this AM I heard Kentucky Motor Vehicle Enforcement in Henderson County on 453.300. The traffic wias in clear, repeater mode with "base" barely being heard and the "mobile" being just a nudge louder and reporting that he is working Henderson & Webster Counties for this tour.

I still have not heard anything from the Morganfield tower and it is less than 5 miles from my house. {this tower also has the Kentucky State Police repeater for Union County}

This is how I understand KVE and KSP will operate (per a news conference this afternoon):

The low-band system has been retired for all intents and purposes. KVE will operate primarily on the state freq (453.300) along with 38 other state agencies... however, they ALSO have KSP radio gear in their cruisers including the TAC channels and mobile repeater set-ups. They will use the KSP Motorla system if they need back-up, see something happening, etc. They can also now hear Road Troopers who might also need help, etc...
The intent is for the two agencies to help one-another. This system also gives the two agencies the ability to interoperate with other agncies in the state as needed. There are more than 200 Spectra P-25 mobiles, the Vehicle Repeater Syetem and 17 Spectra P-25 Control stations located at each of the way stations. The Dispatch Console at the Transportation Cabinet Emergency Operating Center has also been upgraded to work in the new system.....
Keep in mind that KSP and KVE are both in the Kentucky Justice Cabinet. I
am efforting a Unit Numbering plan for the KVE folks when they are on the KSP system....

In central KY, KVE is using 153.920 with a of 186.2 PL as a mobile extender/vehicle repeater system. This is a frequency that has in the past been used by KSP as a tactical channel.
This is being used in the same manner that KSP uses 154.665

As I understand the plan, KVE will operate on 453.300 (analog) as their primary freq.... they will have the KSP freqs including the VHF TAC and Mobile Repeter freqs as well..... they have the option of using the best freq for their safety.... and are encouraged to listen to the KSP post in which they are operating as well....
