The San Mateo County Sheriff has activated the reverse-911 system to alert people in a three-quarter mile radius of a voluntary evacuation.

There are freelance firefighters on scene on Concord Way, they need to be removed.

Eyewitness tells KRON-TV odor of gas has been in San Bruno neighborhood for weeks before explosion

LOL, only an idiot would say gas was smelled a week before the explosion, ie if you smell gas, you report it right away.

Somebody is incompetent or seeks attention.

Whether its the eyewitness seeking attention, or PGE is incompetent, or the people smelling gas are incompetent at reporting a gas leak.

I am not sure if its a true report, to early to tell but I would think if it was reported it would have been looked at..

Well what the hell??? That is crazy. I cannot believe nobody told PGE about that can you? PGE is going to fry for this one if they ignored it.

Only crazy if they went out to investigate and ignored a major problem.

You can smell natural gas at very low levels (the whole point of the odorant additive). We go out all the time for natural gas leaks where the gas company shows up and does nothing...pilot holes get drilled in the street to vent the gas and keep it from migrating while the project gets added to the repair list. Sometimes, the gas company will come out and perform emergency repairs the same day...just depends on the severity of the leak when they arrive. We had one street in our local that went for many months with nor repair. We got hit out numerous times for reports of gas leaks in that area before it was finally repaired.

Obviously, there was some sort of catastrophic failure here. We'll just have to wait for all the details to emerge.

I'm Out

I'm logging off RR. My prayers go out to the families of this devistation, and prayers and admiration to all of the public saftey teams that work to keep us all safe. This is a great example why public saftey workers should never be part of a solution to a cities budget problems.

You are in the know here-they reported that (BREAK petco in Tanforan volunteered their facility for evacuated animals-nice folks) they reported that the natural gas shot out from the ground in gas form with huge force-then flamed. What would create that situation?

NBC Bay Area says PG&E spokesman Jeff Smith confirms that the gas line was PG&E's. In part of a written statement, Smith said "Though a cause has yet to be determined, we know a PG&E gas line was ruptured. If we are responsible...we will take full responsibility.

So it still sounds like a mess, at some point someone said something about 4 carriers (Im assuming 4 aircraft carriers) that were in port near the time of this. I just dont understand why a huge natural gas line would just explode.....
