I'm new to ham DMR. I was wondering if I'm on a talk group on a rpeater, will I need to key up to activate the talk group or will I just hear normal traffic.

That depends on quite a few things. Your radio, firstly. If it is set up to listen to any TG, timeslot, colorcode, AND contact, you might hear audio.

Now for the repeater.....just because you are parked on a TG doesnt mean the repeater knows that. That's where your question comes in. You need to know about the repeater. There is probably a webpage that explains its usage and available features.

As far as general usage, follow good practices. Look for RF activity by way of your LED before keying up, but I'm pretty sure you know all of that. Then, either kerchunk or throw out call sign along with the talkgroup you THINK you are on. As in, "AA1BB, Talkgroup Virginia 3151." That is a good starting point.

The other reason you need to go to the repeater page is to find out if they are connected to the internet, and if so, what network to boot. It might not be a worldwide or even statewide network. Might be a couple geodiverse radios that cover a relatively small area.

Lots to think about, but remember at the end of the day, it is radio, so learn throughout that day.

Typically the repeater owner will assign a static talk group to each of the two time slots. You should be able to look that up fairly easily on RepeaterBook. Once they’re set up on your radio you should be able to hear any traffic on them without having to key up or anything.

To change to a different (dynamic) talk group you would normally just make sure no one is using the timeslot on your repeater and then announce that you intend to key up some other talk group. Then you would just change to some other talk group on your radio and make a call.

On most repeaters the dynamic talk group will stay on the time slot for about 15 minutes and then automatically switch back to the static one.
