Hey all,

I'm currently testing my live scanner feed, which is currently set to the
NOAA Weather Radio for the St. Louis area at 162.550mhz. It's set to this,
as of right now, for testing purposes because it's active 24/7. I still have to
figure out how to limit the number of connected users, don't want to chew
up my bandwidth too much.

I'm using Windows Media Encoder for the Broadcast, so far, I've only tested it in
Windows Media Player. I also, need to get a better cable to hook up the scanner
to the PC, one that is shielded to help reduce noise.

Hopefully, I will be able to give out the URL soon. I'm not sure what I'll actually
broadcast the most, but for now, it's going to be the NOAA Weather Radio.

Also, since I have a Dynamic IP with my DSL, I've signed up with a Dynamic DNS service to give
my ever changing IP an Alias. So everytime my IP changes, the Alias stays the same.

I'm planning on making this feed available to some of the Yahoo! Groups I'm a member
of that are related to my area.

not that you asked, but here are some things i learned from streaming various scanners/radios to the internet over the past 6 years:

1) be CONSISTENT! your listeners cannot change channels, so keep it on one system or frequency so listeners aren't perplexed when something starts happening.

2) LEAVE IT ON! nothing is worse than a scanner feed that is down, or interrupted, or streaming an idle control channel, etc. resist the urge to tinker and reboot and generally screw around with it when it's "Live".

3) if you research audio codecs a little bit, you will find that you can broadcast your scanner audio intelligibly in as small a sliver as 8kbps - but most software just defaults to whatever it can find installed (Windows Media probably doesn't let you go lower than 12kbps - experiment with these settings to see what you get.

4) after it's been running a few days/weeks, see if your audience would benefit from "relaying" to a larger pipe - the 2 popular methods of streaming back in 2000 were Shoutcast and Live365 (shoutcast allowed users to connect to your computer and get the stream whereas Live365 had you stream to relay server that would then allow countless connections without swamping your tiny bandwidth)

there are about 1000 other things i learned, but that's a good starter set!

I picked up some sarcasm there.

Thanks for the tips Mr. Hanky.
So far the feed has been on since around 6:00am and I have been constantly connecting to it from work to see if it's still active. So far, it has been.

You may also want to strongly consider the type of scanner feed that many of us are now using. I have written a 20 page tutorial on its setup, which is available at the following links:

http://www.scanmassachusetts.net/livescan/feed_tutorial.pdf (Adobe Acrobat)

http://www.scanmassachusetts.net/livescan/feed_tutorial.doc (Word)

If you'd like to listen to and view the feed, Winamp is the ideal software and the only one that will show alpha tagging. The feed link is:

I have my feed up and running... it recieves Tuscaloosa public safety agencies. The IP is http://68.62.126.174:8000/listen.pls it should be very active during the Alabama football game this weekend!

IMO the audio is a bit hot (Loud). You may want to turn down the volume some.

Cool deal though.

I had one in Tucson for a while. I used an encoder that was 11k in stereo. I had it hooked up to 2 scanners. One tuned in the FD on the left channel and the other on the right was police agencies.

A listener could tune one or the other or both.

I am now working with someone that will be helping to set up a means of controlling any scanner over the net.

Everyone will be able to here it but only one person will be able to control it and see the activity. Synching the action and audio is the tough part and may not be resolved. There are codecs used for VOIP that may shorten the delay alot.

Stay tuned :)

Thanks for providing the feed, but I agree with the above. Your audio is definitely out of balance on the high side. Whether the scanner is too loud or your line in setting is cranked too high, it definitely needs to be adjusted in the downward direction. :)

terryt, OMG NO you didn't!?!?!?!?!

you actually PAID money just to be able to listen to an online scanner?

You got ripped off man.. go to http://www.scanamerica.us and search for a ton of free scanners online to listen to. Mine is being fed from there as well.

I''d like to know where you signed up to pay to listen to an Ottawa Valley feed, considering there's two of them and neither of them charge to listen to the feed.

Please provide us with a link so we can look into it further.
