I layed out two radials today for antenna grounding, and sigs are pretty darn loud on 120 and 90 meters. 4915khz Radio Cultura ondas Tropicais, Belem, Brazil was S8 an hour before sunset (0000z) and now (0115z - just after sunset but still light out) 4885khz Radio Difusora Acreana (Brazil) is a solid S9. Unfortunately, along with sunset came the static crashes which are peaking S9+10, making for pretty lousy listening. Maybe will try some AM BCB tonight. Monitor the graveyard channels for a while.

I tried 4915khz and nothing but noise....so I moved on to 4885 and got a fairly good signal on that one but the static was a bit overwhelming. I haven't trolled the BCB in quite awhile. Looking forward to the weekend when I have more time to devote to SW

Radio Bulgaria was coming in with a fairly decent signal here in SoCal. I never heard this station before back in my "heyday" of DXing back in the 1990s. Impressive!

I started listening at around 0150 GMT and heard some rather haunting vocal music, very much in the style you are likely to hear in the Balkans. When the English language announcer started speaking, it had that "hollow" sound that makes voices hard to understand. Though the signal was strong, S9 swinging to S20, the background noise along with the vocal tone made hearing complete sentences hard. The music comes through, though, very nicely.

Static crashes here are building again. Long wave and medium wave pretty useless already. I have had the opportunity to try out an Icom 756Pro the past few days, and yes, it's nice and all that, but it's got nothing over my 20 year old Yaesu FT-767gx. In fact, I still prefer the Yaesu in it's simplicity and they way the filtering sounds. I was surprised to find that the Icom gets overloaded with AM BC band energy from my big wire just like my old Yaesu does. I find it comforting to know that the grass is, in fact, not always greener on the other side of the fence.

0554utc 9660 Radio Australia-English out of Brandon (a first for me) instead of the usual Shepparton. Decent signal at s7 to s9. But I almost fell off my chair when I saw it's only 10,000 watts??!!! It is a slick cruise across the ocean from me but still:)

^^justt signed off at 1630utc, but picked them up on 15570khz Arabic same relay. I now have Radio Taiwan Int'l in English out of France on 15485khz 1635utc good copy s7 to s9 but just ok voice copy.
OK copy Radio Riyadh in Arabic out of Saudi Arabia at a fluttery s5 to s7 ok voice copy. I wonder why all the arab ones are so shakey with carrier-lousy transmitter stations, or all that sand makes for bad ground?

Found myself awake this morning about 1000z, just before local sunrise. Using my Eaton FR350 I had WWVH Hawaii coming in pretty good under WWV on 10Mhz. I thought that was pretty good. Then was listening to Radio Japan on 9840khz with good copy. Their signal sounded very watery and echoic so I could tell it was direct from Japan (northerly, polar path) rather than a relay. Lots of talk and news about their Super Number 1 Nuclear Power Plant and how things are going with that.

Radio I used:

BTW, this is a killer little radio. My hand crank doesn't work (bought three in that state on Ebay), but on rechargable AA's it runs a long time and has a built in LED flashlight that's pretty darn bright. Hears well on FM and the built in AM loopstick has a killer null. For about $3, I'm very pleased with it!

Found myself awake at 0745z this morning and discovered some good 31 meter conditions to the Pacific on my little Eaton FR350.

10,000khz WWVH Hawaii on top of WWV! Nice copy over Colorado Springs.
9580khz Radio Australia VERY GOOD. Just as good as WYFR.

Not much else to report since EU and AF were in sunlight, but awesome Pacifica conditions.

Funny how WWVH could be so seldomly heard for years through the solar minumum, now it's a regular.

0400z 15,000khz WWVH Hawaii well over WWV about an hour past local sunset.
1030z 10,000khz WWVH Hawaii well over WWV right around local sunrise.

Radio: Stock Eaton FR350
