0900z this morning, took a quick scan of 31 meters. Just below the ever present Radio Australia on 9580khz was a numbers station in modulated CW. 5 letter groups, quite loud. Prob. about 9500khz or so (using my Eton FR350).

Here's my lousy report of the day. Cat knocked my Eton off the table, and now the AM band doesn't work, so I guess I'm 'stuck' listening to shortwave.

0400z Was listening to Radio Havana Cuba with news in English as well as BBC to Africa with news in English. Not sure of the freq, but pretty good sig and easy to find on the dial. Talking about driving to Addis Ababa, some 1,000km from where ever they were and you had to pay the police extra if you wanted to take the 'good road'.

1000z 9590khz (I think) Radio Japan with news in ENglish. Very weird hearing talk about nuclear reactors on shortwave.

1130z this morning, WWVH Hawaii _all alone_ with not even a hint of WWV on 10.000 Mhz. Very unusual for me here in the midwest. WWV is just one E skip hop away, so to not have them in at all, indicates real long band conditions. Radio Australia BOOMING in (as usual) on my Eton FR350.

I have noticed its been very difficult for me during the day to receive WWV it seems the only time I can receive it is late evening. I also notice that I get very little USCG transmissions being only 140 from the Chesapeake where they are stationed . Camslant use to boom in here...I'm guessing the sun cycle is starting to play its tricks.

Sat down tonite and turned on the winradio G31DDC and noticed I had some very nice signals coming in. I tuned to 6155 KNZ at 0049 and had Radio India coming in very clear. I also noticed that the Pixel Tech Magnetic loop on the porch was laying on its side. Real bad thunder storms around here the last few days so I laid it down. So, I had to stand it up and see if the signal improved. To my surprised it got a bit noiser...hmmmmm....time to scan the bands!

Good stuff! That a nice catch of a regional broadcaster from well outside their target.

Wiki: "Radio Dabanga, also known as Radio Darfur, is a shortwave radio station which serves the Darfur area of western Sudan. It has been broadcasting in local languages since December 2008, initially for an hour each day and currently for three hours. The broadcasts feature news in standard Arabic, Darfuri Arabic, Fur, Masalit and Zaghawa."

Thanks guys-right now I have a good copy on China Radio Int'l out of northwest China 13790khz s7-s9, 1446utc

and one more of interest-Radio Japan out of Yamata, Japan on 11815khz 1452utc, playing one of my alltime favorite songs-the theme to "Deerhunter":( what a touching piece..that guitar pulls tears man!

You know, Radio Japan plays American music a LOT-they seem to have a great appreciation for our songs:)

From the mobile, sitting in the driveway. Borrowed Icom IC756Pro + 20 meter hamstick whip on roof (I'm always hitting tree branches with that big thing up there). Pre-amps OFF. All these stations logged well after my sunset.

11700khz 0240z Radio Bulgaria in English from Bulgaria. VG S9+10db Very nice classical music.
11711khz 0245z Radio Argentina Exterior in English from Argentina Fair S8 with QRN crashes. Also some classical music. (I measure them at 11710.5khz)
15510khz 0250z Radio Australia in English from Shepparton. Good S8 to 9.
15240khz 0250z Radio Australia in English from Shepparton. Good S8 to 9. Prog. // to 15510khz.
15180khz 0255z Voice of Korea (North) in English from Kujang. Poor S4 just above the noise and QRN tonight.
15000khz 0255z WWV dominating at this time but WWVH with good signal as well.
15170khz 0255z BSKSA Saudi Arabia in Arabic from Riyadh. VG S9 Not listed as starting until 0300z, but no doubt it's them with the Koran. No stop at TOH, he just kept singing.
This is neat, I can hear both the middle east and Australia at the same time.
15340khz 0305z Radio BUlgaria in English from Bulgaria VG S9 but suddenly *OFF* ! ???
17655khz 0310z Voice of Russia in Urdu from Novosibirsk. Fair S2 but very little noise. Nice polar flutter.
17670khz 0310z Radio Free Afghanistan in "Dari" via Sri Lanka. G s5 Lots of QSB but WOW! Big surprise. Sounds like VOA audio clips in English during their news program. Need to Google this one.
But Sri Lanka at this hour? That's straight over the north pole for me. Cool.
11735khz 0310z Voice of America in Tibetan via Thailand Fair S2. QSB but quiet band allows this one to be heard pretty well. Pre-amp helps quite a bit to kick it up to S6 and out of noise more. Nice logging!
17895khz 0315z BSKSA Saudi Arabia in Arabic from Riyadh Fair S8 with both pre-amps on. Just in noise at S1 without. Again, singing of Koran. Nice surprise.
21725khz 0320z Radio Australia in Engish via SHepparton. Poor right in the noise, S5 with both pre-amps on. Mind blowing that I'm hearing them at all!
15355khz 0325z Radio Sultan of Oman in English via Oman. Poor, S2 just above noise. Pretty much need both Pre-amps on this one but *NEW!* Easy middle eastern music with bongo type drums.

Was looking for Africa to sweep the continents, but laptop battery almost out. Will have to count Oman as 'close enough'. 73 and GN! - RZZ

Really impressive DXs k9. As the only one in the forum who ever goes mobile with SWL, you should be honored:)
This brings to mind a point-the whole mobile DXing phenominon. Like the stock AM/FM rig in my Toyota Tacoma. This thing is so powerful I can listen to a station in Oregon in the evening while going 70 down the freeway. WTF??! The other day I had a small station way down in Santa Cruz playing oldies as I cruised down the main road in South San Francisco-perfect signal.
I guess that 3-footer smack dead center on the roof of your Soobie is an unbeatable setup!

3 foot? It's more like SIX FEET on top of the car. Yeah, it catches looks. :^] It does work well. I've got the 80 meter stick as well as the 40 and 20 and even that hears well down to about 3,000khz. Transmitting a good sig is tougher of course, but it's fun going mobile!

Today,
June 18, 2011 Mobile in Whitnall Park. Nice quiet location parked in the woods. Fair condx, quiet bands. The park is mostly trees and such, so there is only a few houses within a km of where I parked and in several directions, nothing for 5km. It's always been tough DXing from here because the police are on top of any car parked nearby after 10pm, but I have ridden my bike in and strung up wires to DX - backpack style. Daytime is easy though, so I stopped for a few minutes while running errands. Forgot the camera ... next time.

15205khz 1700z BSKSA Saudi Arabia F S7 with Holy Quran, also 15435khz.
15345khz 1705z Radio Cairo in Arabic F S5 listed as english but not. Nice music. Annoying het on 15342. Same freq as I had Argentina yest.
15550khz 1710z WJHR Milton, Fl relig. prog. G S8 *IN USB* first logging of this one for me.
15630khz 1710z Voice of Greece in Greek G S7 interestin music.
15720khz 1710z Radio Nederland in Dutch via Germany G S8 once a shortwave superpower - no more.
17560khz 1715z BSKSA Saudi P S1 with Quran.
17610khz 1715z Deutche Welle via Rwanda F S2 in French

Im in the process of trying mobile listening. I picked up an Icom R-20 and tried out for the first time today. Its seams to be kinda deaf inside of the apartment, thats why I wanted to try it outside. In the house I tried the long wire and loop both clearly overload the raido which I expected.

So off i went to a nearby park I picked up signals much better BBC at 15400 and India radio on 11620. Im in need of a mobile antenna. Im not sure what road to take on my Chevy Trailblazer. Anyway, tomorrow im taking a ride to Valley Forge Nat Park and try my luck there. At the least im taking 20' of wire and an alligator clip...hope i have some better reporting tomorrow night

Happy Fathers Day

Sounds great. I've used one of those mag mount CB antennas, disguised as a cell phone antenna. Sits about a foot tall with a coil in the lower 3rd. It ain't a great antenna, but I doubt you need a great antenna on that rig for mobile. $20 at the local Farm and Fleet, Target, ?? Low profile or just pop it off when not in use. At least it get's the antenna outside the car.
