The EMS director of whichever licensed agency you belong to, will decide if you have a light in michigan. If it's strictly an EMS agency, they are required to have dedicated personnel on standby or on duty, and rarely is there ever an 'all call' type page. Our local hospital based EMS provider rarely allows medics or techs to run lights on pov's. Liability is too high, and standby rotation requires you be within so many minutes of the hospital at normal traffic anyways.
As far as firefighters, it's up to the individual departments to allow members lights/sirens.
I find in my pov, i can usually make better time without the red light, but it's helpful on scene in non-daylight hours. But, the lights do look cool on my truck

BIG NO NO bout the only siren type that u can have is an air horn, and we cant run stop signs or traffic lights, gotta stop. BLAH!! indiana stinks, anyone got a room in michigan for rent *laugh* J

In Michigan, you dont run lights, without sirens.
And while it allows us to avoid some traffic devices, you must do so with full regard to the safety of others. Boiled down, even if someone smokes you while your lights and sirens are going, you'll be accepting some if not all of the blame.
We had an area fire dept (I believe a medic) person charged and convicted of manslaughter 2 years ago or so, for running a red light while returning to the station for airpacks. He killed a young lady while he ran the stoplight, lights and siren.

lordy i didnt realize u guys can run lights and sirens on ur pov's. believe me i wish we could here, some people are just as blind as heck to lights, no matter how many lights u have. down here the law says u have to drive with due regard, must stop for stop signs and automatic signals. which blows because 95% of the departments around here are volly. but my idea is, u should be allowed to blow the light or sign IF AND ONLY IF, you slow down and ensure the intersection is clear, if u drive 90mph through the intersection and plow into the side of a minivan with 5 kids in it killin 3, YEAH U SHOULD GO TO JAIL, u should have known better.. just my two cents, not that it matters much :D J

as we continue to run this post off topic.....lol

I've run beside people at 80mph in a 55 two lane (clear conditions/traffic) and barely been able to get past them. They seemed to think they too had a reason to be going that fast. Rarely does a call justify that fast of a response tho, in my opinion. Adrenalin gets the best of everyone on occasion, but the younger kids seem to be more susceptable.
As far as a radio for your travels in michigan, that corridor of Michigan has numerous counties/dispatch centers. And I believe most, if not all are either trunked or going trunked. I'm not sure, but I believe this limits your ability to just introduce a radio into the system. React still had some folks in the monroe/downriver area, so GMRS might be possible. Even a ham license would get you to a local repeater, but you may have a difficult time getting a response. (I'm not familiar with the specific area you talk about, it may have great repeater listeners.)
Me, the times i've been without my cell or poorly covered, I grab one of the umpteen stander-bys cells and talk to dispatch. Not that it will do a lot of good. Passed an overturned car one day, stopped, assisted with getting the gentleman out (against my wishes..he insisted) and into a passing cars back seat. Used the drivers cell to call dispatch in the area, and tell them fire/ems could slow down, but continue. They got the message, but the trooper who showed up at 120mph apparantly hadnt, and basically snarled at me for her not knowing...

so what its off topic, WHO CARES?!!lol im learning new stuff with every post. and i hear ya bout the cops showing up 9000mph and then getting crappy. i told one state cop to go back to eating his doughnuts and sleeping while on duty. some passer by called 911 over a small finder bender, and i guess told them that people were seriously hurt and they needed police, fire, ems everything. when i heard this over my radio i called back to dispatch and told them they only needed a county officer to respond to take a police report. by the time i hung up my phone this state cop come FLYING past, cut across the median, and pulled in behind me, and said did u call out everything? theres no need for blah blah blha, i finally just got tired of his ramblin that i told him to take his candy butt back into his doughnut shop, and leave us alone, we were fine. needless to say he didnt like that too much, and a friend of mine who is a state cop, called me and told me not to do that again. LOL i guess it didnt go over well when he got back to the post. no offence to any officers that read this post, but boy SOME OF YOU have egos... BADLY... im not sure if its just small counties/towns or if its everywhere, but i had one cop tell me that i didnt know what i was doing by taking someone out of a car that flipped over and was leaking fuel. Im sorry, car leaking gasoline, trapped person, life, death.. screw it, im saving the person, btw the lady lived just fine, but her car didnt last long.. about 5 minutes after i pulled her out, it caught fire... but there are times im very glad to have a cop near by..lol too many freaks out there now a days... lol love to all the cops out there, ur a life saver.......sometimes :D   :D J

about 20 years ago, the decatur michigan fire cheif was arressted for having a police band radio that was on the cass county sheriff frequency, He did not have a premit, so He was arrested! I realized this was 20 years ago but this is to just to tell you, there is a chance of getting busted.

Also I know a Berrien County Sheriff Deputy, he told me in Berrien County if You have a Scanner or Police Radio and do not have a permit, you're busted, no matter who you are!

If he's a friend I would slip him a copy of the law - advertise that you are going to illegally sieze and charge someone with a crime is not good...
