Recently I’ve been trying to figure out how to distinct which division is talking on the radio since all LMPD talk groups have 2 divisions for each one. I was curious on how I could distinct between the 2 division. For example if I was listening to 3rd and 8th divisions how could I find out which division is talking.

The first digit of the unit number corresponds to division number. For example 312-A is a car in the 3rd division, where 822-B is the 8th division.

Drilling down a little more, the section digit is the shift (1 is day shift, 2 is afternoon/evening and 3 is over night). The third digit is the beat area and the letter carrier corresponds to the car for that beat. So 312-A is a third division car, working first shift, assigned to beat 2 and is the first car for that beat.

Anything with "X" is an off duty car.
