Most of the traffic on Lowell PD tac 2 has been encrypted the past week or so. Wondering if this is the beginning of full time encryption for them.

encryption

Possibly. That wave is coming in hard. --not to go to another state, just saying-- but up here, Kennebunk does it, Wells pd, Biddeford, Portsmouth NH, and a few others either go to another channel to go -coded,scrambled, and in p25;encryption' Well's just says " switch over for a minute".. And Portsmouth, has a couple of sgt's or detectives that use it full time, and NH troop A is in the same boat. Beleive me, I do not like it anymore than you do. The above places are only a handful compared to how many user's there are within 200 miles of Lowell. Look at Haverhill
Sorry
Could be worse, could be encrypted trbo or nexden. Trunked

They were testing "Secure-2" about a week ago. I'll have to assume that that is Ch-2 encrypted as afterwards there was encrypted traffic on Tac-2. It also seems to be just the units that talk to dispatch are encrypted. I am yet to hear dispatch use any encryption on Ch-2. There have not been any encrypted comm's on Ch-1, and I don't think there ever will be. However, don't be surprised if channel-2 becomes encrypted all the time due to the nature of its use (Aside from secondary traffic during a priority call).

Are you guys hearing much encryption these days?

My own scanner won't unmute for encrypted voice, so I often don't even notice it. But listening to the online feed while I was at work out of range the other day, I kept hearing garbled audio for car 1 during a bank robbery. I could hear other units and the dispatcher, but not him. I suspect he had selected encryption, intentionally or otherwise. This was on channel 1. When they'd go to 2, there were more units I couldn't hear, but it was still a mixed bag.

I suspect it wasn't intentional, or else they're still getting used to encryption, because often the dispatcher would repeat what the presumably-encrypted unit just said, or the other party they were talking to on channel 2 would reference the contents. ([Garbled voice] "OK, copy, the suspect is in a gray hoodie.")
