Com501 not sure why you're happy about this?? Not much of deal for me they were and still are talking 400 code all day anyway. I was only monitoring it for serious events, you can tell when things are serious tones and what not. I was never an expert on the 400 code system. Your job to encrypt I get it, guess I'll start a daily freedom of information request for the transcripts? (If I cared that much) How are the news channels getting info? Can they buy a APX and monitor? I thought there was affiliation things involved?

Gents, please use the Encryption vs Live Audio Debate thread in the Tavern if you want to discuss this further.

Thanks.

I like encryption. I am on the system. No I won't tell you the keys. Yes, I make money on radios.

Your “on the system”? The 05F6 system? You have the keys to metros talkgroups? I call BS, and I’ll tell you why. We’ve concluded that Metro uses a KMF for their OTAR, that means nobody “has the keys”. They are in a computer.

I agree with Hooligan...your just trying for attention with the whole “I’ve got a secret” persona.

I have the keys - as in they are loaded in my radio. Just remember, someone has to load those keys into the system in the first place, so SOMEBODY has the keys. More than that, my employer agreement precludes comment, so bite me.

Technicians, admins, system keepers must have the keys, loaded and available for maintenance. They are care takers for the systems running. It is common anywhere one will have them and monitor. It isn't a big headed thing but part of the job. When a system fails you can bet they don't take it lightly and hold themself accountable even if it is out of their control why a failure occured. I think many are given a hard time by others which causes a bitter response on perosnal level. Many do not know the politics these admins and techs put up with from pencil pushers.

By the sounds of it the system is running solid with secure options. Which is very good for the users of it. A successful solid system is a tech and admins goal and ease of mind with liability issues being thrown at anyone these days inside behind closed doors.

I was reading an article about when the first officer entered the shooters room at Mandalay bay they didn't have their body camera on. This is adding fuel to the conspiracy theorists fire that metro is trying to hide something. Imagine if metro went completely encrypted before this incident occurred and not after. They would've had a field day with the speculation.

To brag about installing the keys. Having an encoder. Having several radios with keys.. Only comment I have is you had better watch your car and your back! Somebody just might take you up on having the keys and encoder offer! Wonder what your employer would say then?

Also the depts I work and worked for.. Kept the encoder in their office with the software.. Not in the radio shop! Also narco / vice etc could change the codes at random.. We did NOT need the codes to repair a radio! We could repair it in the open mode. Then check encryption by talking to another unit! So we did not need the code.. Also it kept the thing more secret for the main purpose of having it! Not even our dispatch could monitor some of our encryption! Our units would always have someone monitor the dispatch channels in case we needed them? During any activity on the encrypted channels! So I would think twice about bragging about my secret !!!!

I can understand the desire to encrypt. I would certainly opt for it.

Total agreement with the above poster also regarding radio techs having access to the keys/loaders. It's a big security compromise and the weakest link in a good voice security program such as "84".

FOIA request would suffice in that instance.
