Lynchburg announced today that they will be testing encryption tomorrow 11/14 with plans to be fully encrypted by dec.
I’m sure the other 3 county in the system will follow soon after. This really sucks!

Guess I have a G5 for sale 🥲

Another one down. With STARS slowly going the way of the "E" and most of the RVRS the same, I retired my G5 a couple of months ago. I guess I will have to seek other sources and searches to see what will still be out there.

I still get traffic on the SDS100 from around the other counties, but who knows how long that will last.

Wonder what other hobbies are still out there?

I was thinking the same thing the other day about other hobbies. I've been listening since I was about 8YO, so over 40 years. Kinda of sad honestly. I'm going to all my scanners except for my two SDS100s, the 436HP, and a few GRE/Whistler models.

Some of the hobbies I've thought of:
  • Competitive Shooting
  • Photography
  • Woodworking
  • Blacksmithing
  • Knife Collecting (or making with the blacksmithing)
  • Coin/Stamp Collecting
  • Shortwave (more into it)
  • Ham Radio (more into it)
  • 3D Printing

Without a doubt, it's a different world. I keep one scanner devoted to various freqs from off-the-shelf walkie talkies, two to military, and one for just random local stuff that's not encrypted. They're a lot quieter these days, but it helps in keeping my girlfriend scanner-tolerant

As far as scanning goes, when I started in the 70's I never could have imagines what had happened in the last 15 years, but such is life. There was a time in the 90s when a municipality in North Carolina was simulcasting their PD comms on a local cable TV channel and the Delaware State Police was streaming their comms on their own website. Then there was the prison uprising in New Castle County and that changed. I think the owner of Broadcastify had mud thrown his way by Delaware officials.

Times change and technology changes, some of which has nothing to do with encryption. Some folks used to like listening to the business band frequencies then cell phones came along and tow truck operators and oil delivery companies no longer use two-way radio. No one dispatches a TV repairman to a house anymore, we just buy a new TV and listening to Taxi cabs is gone....as are most of the cabs thanks to Uber and Lyft. But all is not doom and gloom just yet...there's still the aviation band to listen to. You just have to give some thought as to how to make your scanners work for you with what is left unencrypted.

As for other hobbies, I highly suggest Ham Radio. Short Wave listening, not much left there except for religious broadcasts. I even enjoy AM DXing with my CCrane CCRadio 2.

According to sources, it is too costly for the sheriffs departments to go full encryption..some only have a few encrypted channels, some have none. Bedford County has no plans to further their encryption anytime soon. Most departments use pc's to handle sensitive information from car to dispatch or dispatch to car. That is a form of encryption in itself. Lynchburg PD is now fully encrypted, with Lynchburg Sheriff and Fire and Rescue still non encrypted as of this date. From what I have been told, they have no plans for encryption for those agencies.
