Manhole Explosion in downtown Indianapolis

Sunday morning 1-30-2011 downtown Indianapolis had 3 underground manhole explosions in the area of Mass Ave and New Jersey Streets. IFD Engine 7 was the first due engine in and reported that they had a manhole exploding and advised all incomming units to stay away from the manhole covers in the area.Engine 7 had a manhole cover that exploded under the engine and the protective plate under the engine protected the engine company and crew. The call went out around 6:30AM on IFD DSP that there was a explosion in the area. There was also a smell of gas in the area aound the same time. Story on www.wthr.com

Ironic that there was a show on history channel last night, discussing the aging gas lines throughout the u.s. :roll: Pretty scary stuff.
