• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I am not a Moto person at all, but a friend had a Maxtrac low band tuned for 6m that we made a trade on, because I just HAD to get a 6m radio back, and money is tight, and I had something he wanted.
He lives down the road, and has all the stuff to program/adjust everything.
We put a few random simplex and repeater frequencies to get me started while I research some known working on the air 6m repeaters, and we will re program it then.

While I am playing with it, when I press the scan button, there is a line on the display next to the scan word, and one next to the priority word. It will make a beep if I press and hold down the scan button, and the channel number will start flashing.

How do I know when the radio is scanning?
I have read that the radio can be set up with user programmable scan lists, but I just have a few channels I want to scan.

Can anyone tell me what the different things on the display mean, and how the scan and select buttons work?

I did a limited search on the net, but cant find a how to guide on maxtracs and their scanning ability.

The repeater-builder site has a PDF of the MaxTrac user guide at: http://www.repeater-builder.com/maxtrac/files/maxtrac100-300um.pdf - user-programmable scan is described on page 16. Lots of other information about the MaxTrac on this site as well.

If you've got an ancient DOS-based computer to program it, the MaxTrac can make a great monitor assuming you only want to listen to a few channels. The scan rate is very slow compared to a modern Uniden or GRE scanner. But the audio is great and depending on the band split of the radio, MaxTracs are becoming very cheap with everyone dumping them for more modern equipment.

I am pleased so far. Internal speaker is comparable to my Icom F5021. Thanks for the info about the repeater builder web site, I forgot to look there!

Read that manual he linked to, that will describe the user programmable scan better than i can put it to words, plus it includes pictures... lol

Good radio all around... FYI if you notice my username here you will see i'm a RBTIP contributor for the Maxtrac series.... ;-)
