• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I'm planning to hide a Maxtrac in my truck and just have a power switch/volume control on the dash for it -- the radio is only used for one purpose, so I never have to touch the other buttons.

My plan is to put a volume knob between the speaker and the radio. Anyone done this in the past with Moto's, and what sort of results can I expect?

Thanks!

Have you considered the possibility of using a remote mount head and just keep the unit out of sight? I'm sure there are specific reasons why you want to keep it hidden, but a remote head is a lot easier to hide than a whole radio. You could even just take the remote head off the bracket and put it under your seat.

If that's not a viable option, I have used a remote speaker with the volume knob right on the top of it with good results on a EF Johnson radio. I don't see why it wouldn't be an option for a Maxtrac. I don't remember the brand, I'll have to find it and I'll let you know specifically what it is.

I'll have to forward this to a friend of mine - he took a GM300 and made a remote kit for it where he had the volume/channel/display in a very small box on the dash and the speaker was mounted and the rest of the box was in the trunk. It can be done, just depends on how much time/$$$ you want to invest.

I haven't specifically done that with a maxtrac, but I've had to do similar things with other radios. Run the maxtrac at as high a volume as you can without distortion, and use an L pad in the speaker as a remote volume control. If you do it right, it'll work just fine.

If you use a potentiometer, make sure you use a logarithmic pot.
