Mexia PD arrests 3 suspected drug dealers - Big haul made following chase
By BOB WRIGHT - Editor

What began as a telephone call about a fight, turned into an operation resulting in arrests of three out-of-town drug dealer suspects and confiscation of what could be the largest drug haul in Mexia history.

Four Mexia Police Officers took part in apprehension and arrests of three men, who face multiple charges. Two were from Dallas, the other from San Antonio.

Police Chief Richard Hawthorne estimates his officers removed some $123,000 worth of drugs off the streets, in addition to the suspected dealers’ arrests. Recovered was $2,188 in cash; 10 “cookies” of crack cocaine, each containing approximately 140 to 150 grams (a gram has a street value of $100); nine and a half ounces of marijuana; a two-ounce bag of crack cocaine, and a shotgun. Additionally, two automobiles were impounded, following a chase in one of the vehicles. These are a 2005 Tahoe and a 1994 Cadillac DeVille.

Local officers don’t know if it’s the largest haul of illegal drugs in Mexia, but the amount is thought to be the largest.

Arrested and transported to the Limestone County Law Enforcement Center (county jail) were Ricky Peoples, 23, of Dallas; DeMarcus Davis, also 23 and with a Dallas address; and Danieal Williams, 32, of San Antonio. The charges lodged against each are as follows:

*Ricky Peoples - Possession of controlled substance over 400 grams, a first-degree felony; evading arrest with a vehicle, a state jail felony; and possession of marijuana over four ounces.

*DeMarcus Davis - Tampering with physical evidence, a third-degree felony; possession of a firearm by a felon, a third-degee felony; and and possession of marijuana ovr four ounces, a state jail felony.

*Danieal Williams - Possession of a firearm by a felon, a third-degree felony; and possession of marijuana over four ounces, a state jail felony.

The trio was arrested Sunday morning after officers had been summoned at 3:56 to the VIP Lounge, a nightspot at 322 South Highway 14. The call which came into the Police Department, said “There is a fight in progress,” and the caller also said weapons were on the scene.

Officers Roy Fikac and John Bailes were first to arrive at the VIP Lounge, and determined the suspects were leaving the scene in a gray 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe. Officers Leonard Stewart and William Rogers then arrived on the scene, and were advised by Fikac that the suspects were leaving and were in possession of a firearm.

Stewart and Rogers gave chase, while Stewart observed that the subjects had thrown a black shotgun from the passenger window. Stewart and Rogers stopped the vehicle on South 14 after the Tahoe driver had attempted to turn around in the middle of the road in an effort to travel northward on 14. The PD vehicles blocked their path, taking the suspects down at gunpoint, fearing there might be other weapons present.

After the arrests, a search of the vehicle found a large amount of marijuana in the vehicle. At that time, Officers Fikac and Bailes arrived on the scene, with Stewart and Rogers.

During furfther investigation, it was found that the driver of the Tahoe, Ricky Peoples, had also been driving a burgandy Cadillac, which had still been parked at the VIP Lounge. In questioning, the subject was asked if there were any other weapons in the vehicle.

All three subjects were transported to Groesbeck by the four officers. They then returned to the Cadillac at the nightspot, for search and impoundment. The ensuing search by Fikac and Stewart, turned up about three pounds of crack cocaine, which had been hidden in the trunk area. Also discovered was a large amount of marijuana, one-half pound and two and a half ounces of powder cocaine, and a set of digital scales, the type often used to weigh drugs.

Since Jan. 1, the Mexia Police Department has made 60 arrests, of which 16 have been drug-related arrests.
