Yeah the altitude really helps. It was tracking northeast of me (where all the trees and buildings are on the horizon) so getting 245 nm out of it was great that direction. On good days I can "see" aircraft over east central Ohio - which is in the 270 -300 nm range. It helps the horizon that way is water and more water.

I might have the ability to put an ADS-B receiver around the 300 foot mark of a tower down the road. Wonder what the range would be at that height? :ROFLMAO:

Lot of DEED tankers off and running Eastbound.
DEED-25 18-46049 22ARW
DEED-26 15-46009 22ARW
DEED-12 #63-8013 Ohio ANG
DEED-14 #61-0317 AZ ANG. mispelled DEID.
DEED-13 #59=1509 EB
DEED-22 #18-46039 22ARW
DEED-23 #62-3506 Iowa ANG
DEED-27 #18-46054 Pease.
Seems the KC-46's are all headed to LERT Rota Spain.
Thinking the KC-10's May be DEED-11,21 down the road on this move.
Someone on twitter said 5th Bomb Wg Minot mission codes for these tankers.

A Vid just up of that Nuke sniffer MILLER-36 that was working out of San Juan..
Almost looks like APU's mounted on the sides but guess could be air sample collectors?
Up on front of tail fin looks like another gadget that looks like a microphone.. Maybe that is sampler?
Also a rare Boeing B-727-200 VP-BAP which seems to have a home in Van Nuys Cal.
Seems like yesterday 727's were a dime a dozen.

Report the DEED tankers are for this exercise Joint Oak-23 going on in Israel. Does list B-52 strategic bombers under Centcom release.
Eight tankers with 4 on this side suggest at least 4 or more Buffs perhaps.

I was curious so I did some calculations. It's actually not a big factor unless the aircraft is at low altitude with obstructions in the way. The calculation I used didn't take into account RF propagation, obstacles, transmission line loss, antenna gain. It just uses the height of each antenna.

An antenna at 300 feet will receive an aircraft at an altitude of 30,000 feet from a distance of 269 miles (approx. 234 nm)
With an antenna at 10 feet same altitude for aircraft distance = 249 mi (approx. 216nm)
That's a difference in distance of 20 miles!

When you get up to the frequencies that ADS-B uses, propagation comes into play much more so than VHF/UHF.
ADS-B Frequencies

  • Mode-S Extended Squitter: 1090 MHz;
  • UAT: 978 MHz.
  • Interrogator: 1030 MHz.

For those that are interested.... I used this site:

Just curious - are you surprised that it is only a 20 mile increase ?

More than I thought actually. One day I'll run out to the tower, hook up a receiver and see what it gets.
