To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello,
The Motorola Minitor VII (7) is essentially the Minitor VI (6) with a few minor upgrades. All Minitor 7 pagers are all now 5 channel and UL rated Intrinsically Safe. New features include the ability to scan all 5 channels at once, adjusting the squelch level from the playback buttons, a pass device like mode called "Warning Alert", and 20 minutes of voice storage. There is also an improved charging system on this pager, with the contacts being on the sides where the charger rails slide into. From what I noticed from carrying both, reception is about the same. the Minitor 7 is slightly larger in height but feels slightly lighter then the Minitor VI. If you are buying a new/first pager, I would buy the 7, however if you already own a working Minitor VI there is really no big reason to upgrade it unless you want to scan more than two channels at once. They both use the same batteries, so battery support for the Minitor VI will still be around for a while, although all pagers will probably have to use the UL Intrinsically Safe batteries at some point in the future.

So not a ton of difference. Cool. Thanks!

I was issued a 7 a couple of months ago and agree with the overview @Quick-Call03B74 offered above.

The most significant improvement that I've seen so far is the side charging contacts. This eliminates the poor contact with spring-mounted pogo pins that occurs when the contacts get dirty.

But this improvement comes at a cost - the pager is about 3/4" taller. Might as well go back to a Minitor 1 at that point.

And they FINALLY fixed the bugs that plagued the first release of Minitor 7 software.

I too am amazed that they did not add in P25 page/call alert ability. For me the mintor 6 is still the best product.

Why fight with Unication
Unication holds the monopoly basically, a little competition wouldn't be bad.
Perhaps if Motorola started actually making their pagers again, their engineers would come up with something better.

Who the heck wants to carry that brick around? Mine as well carry the small Icom F52/62D that does more pager functions and you can actually talk on it if need be, for slightly more.

I to would like to see P25. I have 2 M5s and 2 M6 and full scan would me nice.
But since I have the G5 pager all my other stuff is collecting dust. The P25 uhf is scary loud and clear as a bell.

Just my rant

Minitor 7 has NO option for the 500 mhz band which is crucial for me cause my FD operates at 502.525

I'm shocked that M hasn't added P25 to the Minitor line like the G5.

Im curious how the reception is on the M6 and M7. The M5 was not too bad, but the M2 was the best. Never used a M3 or 4, but from what I heard the reception was junk.

That would require them to also add trunking capability (conventional P25 paging is exceedingly rare, I've personally never seen any setup like that). Why would they waste money on R&D for a P25 trunking pager when they can simply sell you an APX with the Tone Signaling option? If they really cared, they would've seen Unication as a threat many years ago and would've responded in kind...or just bought out Unication. They never did, which speaks volumes.
