I was listening to some of the activity for the London Comm Centre activites off the Cayuga and Brantford towers on the 13th of this month.

Fleetnet TG 2784, SW MNR TG was pretty active. I am naive and I dunno what the hunters and fishermen are allowed to hunt/catch at this time of the year but the TG was pretty busy. Not sure if it was patched in with one of the OPP TG's.

Normally I would have heard the MNR units call to London Comm and use a prefix of Romeo but on that day it wasn't London Comm, it was Sault St. Marie comm on RID 18353 and 18361.

Instead of using the normal call sign of "Romeo" I heard the MNR units calling themselves "Charley."

There was no number used before Charley; Haldimand uses Charley and so does Burlington but in both cases I would hear 6Charley for Haldimand cars and 5 Charley for the Burlington cars. As always the MNR just uses a phoentic, Romeo but now Charley.

Anyone in the know about a change here? The activity was the normal officers going into parks and hunting areas. Interestingly, the MNR units were busy in Toronto, not sure if any other area I heard that day was outside Toronto.

And there is no chance that I made an error on the call sign and SSMarie dispatch.

I asked a similar question and EXKALIBUR answered it: I was hearing this off a Muskoka tower.

Sault Ste Marie is likely on the 1-EMER talkgroup for the MNR. Sault Ste Marie is where their Provincial Coordination Center is.

Myself I believe they were doing take downs on night kills it went on for a few nights they were actually following the poachers and watching at least 4 groups in my area. The last two nights they were assisted by the OPP this was a week before bambi season opened. Most calls were in the clear than there were periods of time when ENC. popped up on the computer screen I use a dongle with DSDplus and SDR software. Hope that helps

While I was up in North Bay a few weeks ago, Sault Ste Marie came up on 1NRT004 quite often.

I believe they have access to all 4 Fleetnet zones and typically monitor the EMER channels.

Interesting. Especially that the comm Centre in SSM would be handling these calls.

So would these MNR units be some sort of special taskforce? What I heard were a few units in the 416, specially Bluffers Park in Scarborough, one unit in the parks along the Humber River and a unit in Elora.

I dunno if there is any hunting allowed anywhere in the GTA, and the officers might have been looking for fishermen.

I am not sure if tg 2784 was patched with anything, I did not run any of the discovery items on the HPATROL nor was I running T88 or Unitrunker.

Normally it seems that the Wellington TG 8416 is patched with a MNR tg and they are sometimes patched with the Lambton OPP tg. On Nov 13 it didn't seem as if any of these were patched with MNR.

EJB what antenna are you using to listen to Cayuga and Brantford towers. You must have you antenna up high up to get them.

Pitachio: I am 9 floors up in Aldershot. My radio room faces the city of Hamilton. I use a few different antennas:

KSMA is a multi-band tiny little mag mount. It supposedly is good for all the frequencies, it does a decent job.

I took a wire hanger, measured it to the exact length of a Larsen 1/4 wave that I bought from Lakeshore in Toranna. And it looks as well as the Larsen to be honest.

I have another radio for the 800/900 Meg and it easily allows me to monitor and communicate in that band.

So normally Brantford and Cayuga is easy to receive. On my balcony I am usually able to monitor Mowat, Brittania, Woodlawn and even King City.

For whatever reason I cannot monitor the welland tower. If I go to a neighbours apartment facing the Skyway I get a full signal. 50 feet away in my place, no go.

On good skip nights I get Simcoe, Woodstock and sometimes Aylmer. I dunno why Aylmer but I look at the radio and whatever the tower #is for Aylmer, it comes in 5/5.

With a long Diamond antenna, it's a popular one, I forget the model #, I csn usually get Brantford and Cayuga in my radio room and the balcony. With the antenna that comes with the radio, just Charlton.

In some parts of our apartment I was able to monitor the old Toronto system and I can barely, just barely, scan the new 700 mgh system.

Height and antenna are extremely important. Chrome, a member here said it perfectly. If you are gonna drop a lot of $ on a scanner you should get a good antenna to get it to work. It's like buying a Porsche and getting tools for a K-car.

Looks like Sault Ste Marie is handling game licence checks now that deer season is open. I'm not sure if the OPP can check licences or whether the volume of calls might be to high to handle.

I've been hearing MNR on 2864 - 2NRT004 - TAC4 in Zone 2. Likewise referencing units as Charlie units without any number designation before the name, just after. Ex. Charlie 104. Again, dispatch is Sault Ste. Marie.

I don't even hear anything on 2992 - 2Pembroke (Enforcement) which would be my closest regional office.

Units tend to be all over the place that I have heard not just in my county.

I find that the units typically stick on the Ops or Tac channels. Sault Ste Marie is showing up on 1NR001 with units in Southwest Ontario. North Bay area units were using 3NRT004 to contact Sault Ste Marie.

The other channels such as 2Pembroke seem to be for unit to unit chatter.

To your question(s) about the MNR.

The MNR now is all done out of Sault Ste Marie. It is no longer dispatched out of the OPP COMM Centre. The OPP COMM Centre no longer has access to the MNR Talkgroups.

All the old Talkgroups you used to see show up like: 3NRO01, 3NRO02, 3NRO03, 3EMER, or for your area: 2NRO01, 2NRO02, 2NRO03, 2EMER or the same for: 1NRO01, etc. They are no longer used anymore. Unless the MNR enforcement guys decide to use the other talkgroups for other stuff.

All COMMS should be on: 1NRT04, 2NRT04, 3NRT04, 4NRT04.

And with this you will hear all the MNR units talking, where before you would only hear certain ones that were on the talkgroup it was supposed to be on for the area they were in and the Talkgroup you were monitoring for that area.

And yes Steve is right like he said: 2Pembroke for your area is there private channel and those are still used if they want to talk privately to each other where Sault PCU cannot hear them and they can talk and say what ever they want on those private channels.

So that is why you are hearing comms now from Sault PCU Dispatch and no longer from the OPP COMM Centre and no longer on those other main Talkgroups they used to use before.

And as to why they are are now being called "Charlie" instead of there normal callsign of "Romeo". I don't know. Otherwise it's still the same just now being called "Charlie"

Zone 1 units are on 1NR001 and 1NR003.

Ok guess it is only for Zone 2-4 that they are on NRT04. Not zone 1, thought maybe they switched in all the zones.

Talkgroup numbers and the matching descriptions.

Should be talkgroup 2864 on all 4 zones and should be labelled as 1NRT04, 2NRT04, etc, etc.

I would guess that these talkgroups probably already exist where members have been able to confirm activity on them.

Just checked. The only zone that doesn't already have this talkgroup is Zone 4 and it's probably because nobody has confirmed it there.

Are you going to submit the 4NRT04 Talkgroup for Zone 4 to the database Steve or do you want me to do it later.

Yah that is what it will be labelled as for all 4 zones.

Since that is the only and main Talkgroup now used for the MNR. I have heard it on the White River Zone 4 Tower Frequency (142.095) when there happened to be a MNR unit in range of that tower.
