Mobile antenna mounts

I am researching for a good trunk lip/non-permanant nmo antenna mount for my car to use for a scanner.

I guess my first question is do you guys have any suggestions?

Secondly, I am looking into cables and things and am now curious. Is it possible to order a mount and specify the type of coax and connector you want on the end? I am thinking I would like the mount to have RG8U cabling attached to it and would need a BNC connector. I do not have any soldering experience and am not sure I could construct this myself. Do the companies do it for you?

Please help me out. The glass mount just does not cut it anymore.

RG/8 will not fit through the edge of a trunk mount, nor fit into a BNC.

Buy a good quallity professional NMO mount with low loss cable.

Have a friend put on the BNC.

You might find a company who makes a cable set with a BNC, but most come with no connector attached to make installation easier.

The statement that BNC connectors will not fit on RG8 is incorrect.

There ARE BNC type connectors made for RG8 coax. These will also work on Belden 9913 and LMR400. A quick search on the web will give you several choices.

Not to "top post", but I think you may be thinking about RG8/X or RG8/M (Thin cable with loss similar to traditional RG8)

Real RG8 is about 1/2 inch, and there may be connectors for it, but I have never seen a BNC connector for it.

I certainly would not connect a cable that heavy to the top of a portable.

I have seen BNCs that fit RG8/U (.412" diam.) and may even have
one or two around, but the are not very common. RG8-X is substantially
higher loss than RG8/U. As for thick coax to the radio, I would avoid
it as you say, due to the strain it puts on the radio connector as well as
being generally unwieldy.

I would buy a Motorola brand 800 MHz low loss trunk mount kit and a BNC for RG58.
But I am "Old School".

You could use RG8X which is the same OD as RG59/U and has several dB lower loss per 100 feet than RG58A/U, or something called "DuraFlex" which is like 8X. Note that 58A/U is foam coax, 15.5dB per 100 feet at 900MHz; regular 58/U is 20dB per 100 feet. I don't have figures for the 8X but RG59/U is 11dB per 100 feet at 900MHz.You can use a BNC that accepts this size. On the other hand, if it is only 10-15 feet, the difference is only about a dB or two, is that worth the extra effort?

Check rfwiz.com - they have a great trunk-mount NMO w/ low-loss cable that is rated for only around 9-10 db loss for 100 ft. at 900MHZ .......cost is only about $20. very discreet/professional looking setup. I have one and am exceedingly pleased.
