I have updated my mobile shack recently.

I have a 2020 Ford Explorer XLT (civilian model)
HP-2 on the headliner for various trunked/P25 transmissions. I use the built in speaker since it's up around my ear level and the volume is loud enough for me to hear it quite well.

Uniden RH-96 remote head paired with a BCT-15 (mounted under the driver's seat) for analog NYPD/EMS/Etc. Hooked up to a mini extension speaker mounted right behind the center console.

SDS-200 mounted in the console area under the armrest. Used to listed to the numerous simulcast systems in the NYC area. Nothing else was even coming close to reception of those systems, so I had to go with this expensive option. It was the best I could find to install it with the limited room I had to work with. It is paired with an external Midland speaker mounted to the vehicle's rear seat cup holder mount and facing front.

Sorry for the sideways pic of the Mototrbo XPR-4550. It's a remote head (brain is mounted under the front passenger seat) mounted in the glove box and used for work comms and the local "buff" notification frequencies.

Scanner Antenna is a Motorola all band AN000131A02 hooked up to two in-line SP-1300 antenna multicouplers. A bit expensive but I found it works very well and I got it brand new for under $100 on ebay since it looks "official"
The Mototrbo is hooked up to a Laird low profile UHF antenna on the left.

Jason, nice set up. I'm interested in the Laird low profile antenna you have your 4550 hooked up to. Is that a good "long range" antenna, or more of a "regional" antenna? Thanks.

Don't think it has much if any RF gain. I use it mostly for local signals. I have heard transmissions from over 50 miles away at times though. They do make db gain low profile antennas. One type is the "fin" style. I don't know who makes it though. I believe that is at least a 3db gain low profile antenna.

The low profile or "phantom" antennas are going to be basically no gain, for the most part...great for local/regional but not for really "getting out there" on the fringes.

Example: Laird Connectivity TRAB4500N

It shows 3dbi gain, which we know how to interpret that show not a "gain" antenna. But great options for local/regional for sure.

More of a local antenna. Works OK if you are never very far from the radio tower you want to hit.
