• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Since Montgomery went to a digital trunk system, not any old trunker will do the job; the following is a list of the digital trunktrackers to consider;

a. Uniden BC250D handheld with optional BC25I card (yes, you will need that)
b. Uniden BC785D base/mobile with optional BC25I card (ditto)
c. Radio Shack PRO96
d. Uniden BC296D handheld (card is built in)
e. Uniden BC796D base/mobile (card is built in)
f. Upcoming January 2005: PRO2096 (mobile version of PRO96)

The 'optional card' referred to in the first 2 items is a plug in card that enables digital reception. The other models do not need it, or have it built in.

To get you started, the Capitol Hill Monitors scanners page has many links you can investigate to help you make your decision. The URL is:

http://henney.com/chm/links/scanners.htm

I've heard it said that the PRO96 is easier for a newcomer to work with, since many systems are preprogrammed into what are known as 'V folders'. I would imagine that Montgomery is in there (someone may want to comment here).
Make a list of 'want to be able to dos' and do your shopping accordingly. For example, do you want to be able to hook up the scanner to a PC and have it log and count hits, control, ect....do you need a base or handheld unit...do you want to be able to listen to military air freqs?...and so forth.

Watch for Xmas sales - no doubt they will be coming soon!

There are numerous threads on this board on this very subject.

73s and GL with your decision...Mike

Just FYI, I think the Pro96 (out now) is the portable version... most of RatShack's desktop ones start with a "20" model number, so the 2096 would be the digital trunking desktop model... when it comes out. :)
