Resurrecting an old thread...

"Greene County radio communications are about to get much better. Part of a Department of Homeland Security grant program, the State of Georgia recently awarded $2,985,000 to Greene County’s Emergency Management Agency to enhance interoperable communications and tap into the Oconee Area Radio System—a joint project between Walton, Morgan, Oconee, and Greene counties to build a trunked, 800 megahertz radio system."

I was browsing Greene County's website and came across this from Nov. 2009. Full press release is here. It's a bad sign when they brag about encryption in a press release.

Nothing further on Morgan County's proposed participation.

What makes this silly is that most of the counties are very rural with little need for more than one single law enforcement channel to cover the entire county.
At night in Madison, Oconee, and Morgan there are often only 2 deputies patrolling the entire county with one dispatcher on duty. Just dont see the need for anything other than a VHF repeater. If they want to go digital fine, but why the need for trunking?
