• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

A computer bought from a company that went out of business, the computer has some of the most recent CPS AND depot tools, and the computer was able to be purchased at a public auction? Does that sound right? Sounds like this fella has baited a hook and is casting away...."

i never post here an advertisment for sale or anything like it, no offers or any monetary compensation im making out of asking a question about what was the most honest and legal thing to do as an advice,,

if the coputer have or not recent programming, if it got gold inside, or there is magic on it... i simply dont know and honestly DON'T Care, if anybody wants to belive it was stolen, thats your opinion, i respect EVERYBODY'S opinion .".I HAVE THE BOLL OF SALE IN MY HANDS" ... SO if wasn't soposed to be sold to me or not , that's my problem??? why before they put it to aution the realestate din't make a simple search " like i try to do here" and decide not to sell? so please if i suspect of someone stilling and or getting stollen property " fallen of a truck" please do the nesesary to take care of that in a more dicrete matter if anybody here suspect of that and i have so take a picture of a bill of sale just to do a simpe question and boder everybody else just let me know and i won't ask nothing else and just leave the forum and never ask questions again in here.....

It does happen. Auctions and surplus along with people who take work home and something happens and then a judge orders a estate auction or property auction and bam its out. I have seen towns or small counties auction off old surplus or equipment a year old because they got a grant or the money and said hey we will buy all new stuff with this fat budget we just got and those smaller departments just auction all off as is. I seen a few ebay sales from small town police, and fire depts posting the radios or computers have this and this etc and it has our keys/software on it/ freqs but by law you must remove them after buying. I seen it too many times. It happens. As for that I have also seen county web pages where they have no clue how to use web page building and redhat then a page or server is open for public to see and view things. One example is I saw a county that had public records open to view and the computer admin put the entire setup open to public. In it a radio shops stuff was there and sure enough it listed all the municipalities encryption keys and frequencies along with near by towns info and keys. (yes when I seen this I reported it and they shut it down immediatly) The normal non radio computer guy has no clue what kvlkeys.doc is and prob cares less when doing his job, simple mistake. Basically this stuff does happen, and auctions too. I hate to say it but too many haters here, the guy got lucky and hit a big one. Was it illegal if he sold it not knowing about /\/\'s junk? No. He bought it from a auction and has proof. Now that he was informed it could become legal issue if he sells it in regards to the software but he is selling a computer not owned or licensed by /\/\ with authentic software within it, how is he liable? he never signed a agreement and bought it from a legal court ordered esate/public auction. It basically could be disputed in court and would be a legal deal between who originally breached the contracts etc. Now if he knows what it is and uses it to make a crazy auction of high price and nutty bidding to thousands of dollars then yes its apparent he knows what he has and is selling not a laptop computer but software without compensating or following the copyright holders policy. Any one who ever has owned a pc has broke the law. You give away or sell your old computer. It has software within it that states you cannot resale or profit from it once you buy it from a store or dealer, Microsoft, and so on. Yet does anyone get prosecuted? no. But Im sure if /\/\ found out the security dept would ask questions. It over all would be lawyers vs lawyers before a criminal complaint can be addressed. You cant charge some one when they legally bought a item and wish to make there money back from a auction buy. Now if /\/\ was wanting to they could get a court order to seize the item and then have the software of theres removed but he could petition it if he has money and a attorney. It could go on and on.

Basically dude, you own it and good luck lucky you wish all were you. If you do your private auction its your call. Im sure half the people wanting to buy it or own two ways here do something illegal any day given monitoring law enforcement depending where they are so there one to bark here. I have seen numerous laptops sold over ebay with all the Kenwood. /\/\, M/a Comm stuff on them. But most the time its listed as normal laptop with only minor details in the description and no one notices.

No, you just have to sell it locally. Find the local ham group, and talk to those guys. They'll know someone who is interested.

No one has brought this up - maybe be a scam and the OP is fishing, for one of you to send a PM for that tasty laptop and send him some Paypal money, in exchange for a laptop you will never see.

He said it was a Dell Dimension 4300, definitely not a laptop... But anyway...

While i am not interested in purchasing said computer, and i am not trying to support this guy... I do want it to be known what he is claiming is not crazy.

How many times have i bought surplus computers with stuff still on them that shouldnt be? MANY..

My field is computers, thats what i do for a living. And its unbelievable sometimes what you will find on used ones. Sometimes it was a company that folded so fast, or someone died, that the assets were simply tossed into a pile and sold, it happens daily across the US. Sometimes its just sold as is because it has passwords and the person handling the sale didn't know better.

More and more now i get surplus computers that the hard drives were simply removed before sale, thats becoming more common, just pull the hard drives for destruction. There is a company that i know of that takes hard drives of this nature and crushes/shreds the hard drives then incinerates them. I know of another one that simply puts them in a large smelting pot to recoup the aluminum while at the same time destroying the data once and for all.

I have an old Compaq laptop, quite vintage, that i got off the family of a guy that worked for a radio shop for 30+ years of his life. Nothing but OLD software on it, but it kick started me into learning how to program these commercial radios and kept me interested for some time. Now i hardly ever use it, i turn it on now and then to see if its still working, but thats about it... LOL

This Needed to be dragged this long, i simply did a question, i am not and expert, i am not fishing for any "PM'S'' to look for offers, i didn't offer to sale, trade, exchange, give away mentioned computer...

ha ha, this is funny...all current (as of this month)
version of Astro 25 CPS..and DEPOT Tool for TRBO?

Yeah, uhm okay- here's the bottom line, you cannot sell, transfer or otherwise
copy said software.It should never
have been sold to you in the first place, especially anything with the
word "DEPOT" in it,
which means it is for Motorola's COMPANY owned depot only. With version
numbers and product lines that fresh,
that computer most likely fell off a truck.

"JRayfield"

Very good points. In fact, some engineers at Motorola don't even have
access to the "depot" software. That software is almost literally,
kept under "lock and key". There is only one way that the depot software
could have gotten on a computer outside of Motorola -
that software was stolen from Motorola.

I wasn't going to comment anymore, but since you included me in your quote here.....

You said that you didn't know about this stuff, that you aren't an expert, and were just asking a question.

So, I pointed out that the Lab (or Depot) software is considered -extremely- confidential by Motorola.

I work directly with some of the top Motorola engineers on projects that are 'secret'. I've had to sign so many Non Disclosure Agreements, it would make your head spin. I honestly have lost count of the number of these agreements that I've had to sign. So I do really know something about this subject.

My comments were to make it clear to you that you have in your possession something that could get you in trouble, if Motorola knew about it. I thought that was being 'helpful', but I guess you don't consider this kind of information as being 'helpful'.

and getting on a public forum, Motorola will SURELY know about it. Heads up, the Motorola IP team do read these forums, Batlabs, P25.ca etc. So it's like getting on a forum and bragging that you have a hard drive with thousands of illegally copied movies with a complete listing.

Think the RIAA and MPAA haven't sent people up the river?

Again, you asked your questions, you got your answers. If you were a smart cookie, you'd say "thanks for the heads up. Did not know any of this was might get me in trouble. Think I'll scrub the hard drive and either sell or part out the PC."

But instead you choose to troll. have fun, but if you get popped or something goes down, don't say you weren't warned.

Listening to this story (if it is true) reminds me of how I felt when a neighbor lady whose husband died said she would pay me to clean some old tools & stuff out of the garage. She offered to pay me but I declined any payment when I saw and hauled off four new in the box 30# bottles of R22 and 3 bottles of R12.

I was the most popular guy in town every summer for about 3 years till the gas ran out---and all the other fringe benefits were great too. Only thing that made me feel bad was when one of my few liberal friends said I surely made the ozone hole bigger.

Burn it

Maybe the better thing to do would be to set it on fire and walk away. This would take care of the worries and any possible legal action against you from Motorola.

See, that was easy.
