Motorola and RCC Mobile Radio Systems Provide TETRA Digital Radio Solutions for St. Petersburg Metro

Motorola, Inc. ( and RCC Mobile Radio Systems, Inc. today announced the successful completion of the first stage of the Unified Digital Radio System (UDRS) for St. Petersburg metro. The UDRS project for St. Petersburg metro is being jointly implemented by Motorola and RCC Mobile Radio Systems (St. Petersburg), Motorola's partner in building TErrestrial Trunked RAdio (TETRA) systems in Russia. The project will provide metro trains and workers with digital mobile radios.

The first stage of the UDRS for St. Petersburg metro consists of 13 TETRA base stations, 1 switching and control center, and has over 300 users. It will go into full operation in December 2007.

St. Petersburg metro’s new professional mobile radio solution is designed to enhance operations and process management in real-time on the premises through improved communications. The final stages of the UDRS, expected to be completed in 2009, will include a switching and control center, over 60 base stations in underground and above ground metro stations, and will have up to 3000 users. The UDRS will provide communication to St Petersburg metro, which is a key part of the transport system for a city of approx 5 million people. The St. Petersburg metro opened its first line in 1955 and has now grown to four lines, some 105km long and approaching 60 stations.

The UDRS is delivered using Motorola’s Dimetra IP platform, a scalable IP based TETRA solution. The Dimetra IP platform is ideal for a project like UDRS as it allows deployment to be taken in stages, adding radio coverage and communication services in line with needs and budgets and provides a flexible and integrated voice and data solution. The UDRS system will meet the growing customer needs across the professional radio market.

“Working with RCC Mobile Radio Systems to develop an advanced digital radio solution for St. Petersburg metro is a fantastic opportunity, “ said Manuel Torres, vice president, Government & Public Safety, Motorola. “The UDRS will provide secure data and voice channels to enable enhanced communication throughout the metro network.”

The UDRS operator is Smolny PBX Company who has been allocated 412-417 MHz and 422-427 MHz spectrum to deploy and operate a terrestrial mobile radio communications network for St. Petersburg metro.
