• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Motorola's Astro IMBE Trunking Type vs P25

I see that Motorola has tried to "blend" the APCO25 / P25 Digital Voice stream portion / standard
with their own Smartnet / Smartzone Trunking design ... They call that Motorola Astro IMBE ... Has Motorola come out with their branding / naming for a full P25 Trunking series of equipment (radios, repeaters, etc.) to sell to large customers / agencies ? Do they just call it by the generic P25 name or have they their own naming / series name for the full P25 Trunking (adherance to P25 standards) and Digital Voice stream ?

Many Thanks,
Victor L. Miller - Northern NJ

The original "Astro" was actually VSELP. Control channels on these systems were still 3600 baud type II protocol.
In the late 1990's after the P25 phase 1 standard was rolled out, they started using P25 for the voice channels, again, control channels were still 3600 baud, type II signaling protocol.

Motorola adopted the P25 CAI for their trunking products in late 2001, and renamed it "Astro 25", which uses a true 9600 baud CC and is fully CAI compliant, meaning you can use any CAI compliant subscriber radios on an Astro 25 system, such as EF Johnson, Kenwood, Icom, etc. Proprietary enhancements, such as ADP encryption, are however exclusive to Astro 25, which the P25 CAI standard allows for "vendor specific features" to be added.

Motorola currently only sells Astro 25 and X2 (which is P25 phase 2) now, they stopped selling the older Astro 3600 baud systems in the mid 2000's.

X2 is not P25 Phase II. X2-TDMA is Motorola's proprietary TDMA solution that pre-dates the official P25 Phase II standard. They are not interchangeable. A Motorola P25 system at ASTRO 25 System Release 7.11 or later can operate with either X2-TDMA or Phase II TDMA, but not both on the same system.

All OK ... Many Thanks Guys ...
I guess when the whole P25 thing took hold ... that effectively removed Motorola's strangle-hold on the Trunking standards , etc ... but I guess they still have huge market share ...

Many Thanks,
