To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

So you can hexedit CPS 16.828 to expand coverage for 900MHz, has anyone done it in CPS 2.0? I’ve tried the 16 method but didn’t appear to work.

Not that I’ve heard of. I just picked up a mint 7580, & I had the owner verify CPS 2.0 never wrote to it.

you tried the 16 method on the radio or tried to do what we do in 16 on 2.0? What firmware is on the radio?

It’s not a what version of firmware, it’s which CPS is being used. You can hexedit CPS 16.828 mototrbo.exe to open the freq to 941MHz, but when I try to do the same in CPS 2.0exe it doesn’t expand the saved new freq range, not sure if there is a difference sequencing of the steps and saving, that’s what I’m asking. Same with the wide and entitlement, CPS 16 you hexedit to activate that feature.

I asked about the firmware because I was curious to know if you needed to use CPS 2.0 or were just wanting to use it. I'm honestly pretty familiar with programming 900 into the XPRs and about 10 or so SL7590s.

No the same hex edit from 16 will not work on 2.0 however, while its elusive a procedure similar to the wide band .dll hack may work on certain specific versions of 2.0.

Odd, I had one that the fellow said was done with 2.0 and when I read it with 16, it read it fine, I did the hex edit and programmed the ham stuff we use on 900 but it had 2.09 firmware on it. I guess that was the reason I asked about firmware. I'll assume you actually tried to read it with 16 and it didn't work.

SO, on to 2.0... Yes and I don't have it in front of me, there's one specific version of 2.0 (or so I'm told) that you can swap a .dll file out and it will read and write to the XPR series (and SL's if not the e series) . I can only tell you it has worked for several of us here in my area. We don't do up to 941 but, do the ham stuff. when I get my programming laptop back, I'll see if it works up to 941 and report back. (may be a few days I loaned it out to a fellow ham to do some stuff in his area). To my knowledge however no one has got it to work yet on a 7550e, for some reason those won't take but we have done it on 4- 5580e, and they took the ham stuff just fine. I have no experience on getting them up on 941 but like I said I'll try that when I get it back.

I have a similar problem and am trying to figure this out, and I am new to Motorola radios. I have a new (to me) XPR-7850. I tried to read the code-plug with 16-828, I got an error #1027 (CP not supported). I loaded 2.0 and read the radio just fine. It had been wiped to what I assume factory defaults. Using 2.0, I opened my 16-828 code-plug which I saved before I wrote it to my mobile radio and tried to write it to the 7850 and it would not accept all the amateur frequencies, which were all in red after I sucked the 16-828 code-plug file into 2.0. I just installed 2.0, so it has not been modified. My XPR-7850 has FW R02.10.00.001 and CP 15.00.16, which I think drives me to using 2.0. I assumed I could edit the CP in a manner similar to what is done in 16-828, but I can't find any info. Can I do this, or do I now own a new paper weight?

A paperweight refers to a radio that doesn’t work at all due to whatever reason. I’m assuming your radio works fine in the 900 commercial band. It is so important to make sure if you’re buying a Trbo radio for 900 ham that FW is below 2.10, & that CPS 2.0 was never used. With my last 7580 purchase, it took a few days before the seller could read the radio to confirm this for me, as he only had 2.0. So he read the radio to confirm it was what I needed, but did not write back to it. So sell your radio on E-Bay, & find one that suits your needs. The guy I bought my radio from got a bunch that work on 900 ham.

I'll message you. Yes you can use 2.0 to do the ham stuff assuming you're a little adventurous.

Your right. The radio works fine in the commercial band.
