• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Any idea what could be wrong inside of it that I may be able to swiftly fix? Or is it a nightmare to deal with?

As others have already said, the next step to troubleshooting should be to try a different radio. That will rule out (or in) the power, feed-line, and antenna. I'd do that before spending any more time troubleshooting the radio.

If the radio is suspect, here are some questions I'd ask myself:

If not the antenna, feed-line, or power, perhaps the receiver circuitry is malfunctioning. Does the S-meter register any received signals?

Perhaps the internal speaker is blown, shorted, or otherwise malfunctioning. Have you tried an external speaker?

Rotate the volume and squelch knobs back and forth several times. Sometimes dust or corrosion can cause the potentiometers to malfunction and working them a bit will free the contaminant. Also check for "dead-spots", in that there could be one or more spots where the volume cuts out completely, even though it's not turned down at all.

Did the radio get wet? Was it operated outside of acceptable operating temperature? If you remove the cover, are there any fuses visible? Are any blown?

Good luck...

With all due respect, and I'm hope I'm not speaking out of place (being new here and all), but I think this issue should be in its own thread, per the rules and announcements posted by the forum moderators. It would probably be a lot easier to follow along, too.

Bought it on ebay and it has supposedly been peaked and tuned

Might not be the cause, but that's a red flag right there. All legal issues aside, it's easy to screw up the receiver, knock something lose, or just generally make a mistake. The guys that do this sort of work are not exactly the sharpest tools in the shed.
Like we mentioned above, this all indicates a reason to try swapping out that radio with a known good working one to rule out an issue with your radio.
I'm not saying that it is the fault of the peak and tune, but that sort of modification tends to cast some shadows over things.

That also would have been welcome information closer to the beginning of all this.
