What's an "open wire"? A wire with an [ open ] in it? Anything will work better than an open electrical circuit. Even beavers know that.

Could you possibly ask a better question sir? At least then some of us here might actually be able to help you.

tnx

directions: go to Beavertown, take a left, follow the signs.

Many antenna designs can be changed for a given app if you know the math...and, in fact, we've got several possibilities on the HF Antennas wiki page. But a much better question comes to mind - this new home, is it in an area with antenna restrictions (such as in a development)? Do you have trees? Can you foresee putting in a real RF ground (and I don't mean just a 8 foot ground rod - that's not going to cut it, unless the water table in Springfield is a lot higher now than when I was there...).
Do yourself a favor; do a survey in and around the property. You don't need to be a professional of any kind - simple observation will do the job nicely. Plan ahead for the antenna you will want to have -regardless of app - and you'll be much better off.
One of my ex bosses (retired Master Drill Sargent from Parris Isl) once told me 'Fail to plan - plan to fail'; Wise words, those 73s Mike
