Well I really thought someone would comment on the yellow police car, I guess this thread has run it's course, thanks to all who participated, it was interesting.

Bill
.

When I visited Toronto, back in 1979 or so, the police cars were all yellow. I was told that they didn't have sirens in them because the chief didn't like how noisy they were. I don't know if that's true or not, but everything else the person told me about Toronto EMS and PD was true so I have no reason not to believe it.

Every restored car from Canada Metro Toronto area Ive seen didnd't have a siren from that era. However Peel did have them according to the restored cars. For a Chief to have that as his reasoning is moronic.

You're being redundant there, aren't you? ;)

Now the only drawback to the Dodge is this (Brakes) they SUCK and are replaced as a 3X rate compared to the Vic's and the Tahoe's that they have in service at this time.

When chasing down tail lights it does take a little bit of time to get use to the closing speeds that the V8 Charger can achieve over the CVPI. As you can see from the stats below, during 14 seconds of full acceleration a Charger is already going 20 mph over a CVPI. I would imagine that that extra speed is one of the reason why the brakes on the Charger don't last quite as long as those on the CVPI.

The following data** is from MSP police vehicle evaluation testing (MY 2010 & 2011):

2011 Ford PI AWD (twin turbo V6)
0-60: 6.27 sec
0-80: 10.01 sec
0-100: 15.53 sec
Top speed: 131 mph
Grattan lap avg. time: 1:36.14

2010 Dodge Charger (police package w/Hemi)
0-60: 6.00 sec
0-80: 9.32 sec
0-100: 14.21 sec
Top speed: 146 mph
Grattan lap avg. time: 1:36.90

2010 Ford CVPI (3.27 gear)
0-60: 8.88 sec
0-80: 14.22 sec
0-100: 23.73 sec
Top speed: 129 mph
Grattan lap avg. time: 1:41.80

2010 Ford CVPI (3.55 gear)
0-60: 8.42 sec
0-80: 13.68 sec
0-100: 22.44 sec
Top speed: 120 mph
Grattan lap avg. time: 1:41.02

2011 Dodge Charger (police package w/Hemi)
0-60: 6.24 sec
0-80: 9.73 sec
0-100: 14.99 sec
Top speed: 146 mph
Grattan lap avg. time: 1:38.47

2011 Chevrolet Caprice PPV (E85 V8)
0-60: 6.15 sec
0-80: 9.91 sec
0-100: 14.58 sec
Top speed: 148 mph
Grattan lap avg. time: 1:37.02

Blue: Quickest times & fastest speeds
Red: Slowest times & lowest speeds

**If I have transferred any of the above date incorrectly please feel free to point that out.

As you can see the 2010 Hemi Charger fares very well. Granted the MY 2010 & 2011 tests were completed on different days, most likely during different atmospheric conditions, but they were all in the dry.

I snapped this photo yesterday while on the way to my detail. IMHO the old Charger is still one sharp looking car.

Chrysler products in general have long been known for crappy brakes, not just the police products. The Intrepid police package introduced in about 2002 had problems with brakes catching fire.

Why their brakes have always been bad I don't know, but it's been that way as long as I've been driving, which is almost 40 years.

Took me a while but I finally saw one of these in action. It's funny I drive I-75 between Flat Rock and Detroit every day and can count on one hand the number of times I've seen a trooper in the last 2 or 3 years. Finally saw one and it looked pretty good... Definately noticable.

I've always thought of the light on top the car as a top hat! I think it definately stands out as no one in Michigan uses them other then MSP at least in the Metro Detroit area anyway.

I love the Charger's they are some sharp butt cars especially with the new rear light design that wraps the trunk lid.

Now if the state would only hire a few more troopers perhaps my ride into work would be less dangerous. I don't drive to work and back everyday; I surive it! The freeways around metro Detroit are like lawless badlands anymore.

People have said the new LED bubble does not have the same effect as the traditional bubble. I saw a State Police car the other day with the LED and it was bright! It definitely got my attention!
