• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This may be the wrong place if so feel free to move it.

I have a couple of MTS2000 UHF radios and I was wondering if there is any frequencies they could be programmed to that do not require a FCC license?

I realize the answer is probably no but I just want to make sure.

Really, no, but there are GMRS frequencies that only require a simple 75 dollar fee and application.

A license of some type is required for these radios to talk to each other. Whether it be a ham license, or some type of business license. However, I'm sure there are thousands of these radios in daily use that have no licenses. The speed limit on I-95 is 70 MPH, but I'm sure thousands of people just in Florida exceed that every day. another thought too, is you can always program in the FRS frequencies.. no license required, although the radios would be over the power output, I'm not thinking the neighborhood kids will complain...

I will look into the GMRS license; what is the form #?

I do have a HAM license but chances are the other people using them would not.

Can they be programmed to output at a lower power level?

I can't remember the application process, but if you log into the ULS and it should point you to the right direction.

Actually, there are.

http://www.craigwilliams.com/radio/miss.htm#The

The "Dot" frequencies in the UHF band are allowable as 5 watt or less simplex frequencies. I have two of them in my radio(s) for personal use.

Keep in mind that these are pretty popular, and Motorola XTN radios are preprogrammed with these, so you may hear local businesses using them as well.

I was under the impression that any business band freq requires a license.

All part 90 radios require a license. It is a common misconception that the "dot" radios don't need a license. Many "Dot" radios come pre-programmed with common business low power frequencies but they still require a license.

The FRS radios are Part 95 and don't need a license. The GMRS radios are Part 95 and DO need a license. The MURS radios are Part 95 and do not need a license. Each of these radios has a specific frequency(s), and bandwidth and power level as well as specifics as to who are eligible to use them. All of these radios are Type Accepted by the FCC and may only be used in bands (or frequencies) for which they have been type accepted.

Well, I guess that is the final word (unless anyone know of a way around that) thanks for the assistance everyone.

...

Actually one more question.

About how much is it to get a license and how long does it last?

Just program in the 14 FRS frequencies and you'll be good to go. Don't worry about the higher power output as FRS is what it is. Anyone who gets worked up about using a commercial 4w handheld radio on FRS simply has nothing better to do.
