Tempo S2 & Alinco DJ-580T

I had a Tempo S2 and it was my first 222 Mhz HT; Worked great then I upgraded to something else and sold the S2 when it started working intermittently. Permanently mounted battery as I recall.

My favorite of all time hand-helds is the Alinco DJ-580T. I've owned two or three of them, matter of fact, I have a DJ-582 which has a few more features. Excellent rig for cross-banding, and always worked like a charm. Only current downside is that it will NOT do DPL, just analog PL's only.

The S2 and the 580

The S2 was my first venture into 220 Mhz back in 91. It would work but for a dead battery. However my Kenwood tri-band handheld covers 220 as well as 2m and 440 and it's a real winner. The Alinco 235 base for 220 is an excellent radio. I have one 580 left but did own four of them in the mid-90s's.

Question on the antennas on top of the scanners -- how well do they receive like that? I take it they're 800MHz?

Antennas

Those two mini magnetic antennas that you see on top of the BC780 and BCD785 work fine for strong signals on most any band. They do function fine as a mobile scanner antenna as well. I have used them in an 800 MHz environment as well as UHF and VHF and experienced no problems. They are inexpensive also.

Mobile Scanner Antenna

As I recall they came under the name of Pro Am possibly by Valor. Back in 2005 I think Amateur Electronics Supply carried the item. I bought mine from a business called Radio World in Boulder City, Nevada (702-294-2666). They might have the antenna if you are looking for it. I have about six of them and like the product very much.

I found them on e-bay for $13.85 each. So, AZMonitor, you're saying they're best for "strong signals" such as repeaters eh? I will remember that, thanks!
