I was lucky enough to snag me a WS-1065 in brand new condition with the plastic on the screen, for $140 cash on FB Marketplace. Not one scratch on it. The seller was only 20 minutes from me, to boot..The seller got it as a gift but preferred using scanner apps. It is my first Whistler but definitely not my first scanner. ( own 2 SDS200s and 2 BCT-15Xs. ) The learning curve was not too bad. I have manual programming down well and also have Win500. What I need to know is how do I check the firmware version on the scanner? That’s the only thing I have not figured out yet. Everything else I’m comfortable with.

From Scanner Master...(should be the same for Whistler)

GRE/Radio Shack Scanners
Step 1 - Power the scanner down
Step 2 - Press and hold the "3" as your powering up.
GRE-that explains why I was not finding anything. Ok got it thanks! So do any firmware updates for GRE apply to the 1065? I’m trying to find out what is current or last update.

I "believe" they are not compatible.

And you're very welcome!
Got it. Thanks. New to Whistler, trying to educate myself on them. So far, I LOVE this scanner. I know it has simulcast issues but other than that, it’s been great so far.😊

You should be able to view the Boot, CPU, and DSP versions by pressing 3 while the Welcome/Owner screen is displayed at power-on.
Thank you.👍

Did Whistler stop supporting the WS-1065 with regards to firmware updates? On their site there’s no downloads or anything for this scanner.

you might want to try
PSREdit - Configuration Editors for Whistler, GRE, and Radio Shack scanners which I use

No need updating firmware on 1065's or 1040's. Latest and IMHO last firmware is 2.9, been shipping 2.9 for some ten years now.
If you have 2.8, all 2.9 did was address searching an edacs system for which you don't have in CT, let alone hardly any nationwide.
Don't even try GRE or radio shack, you will ruin the radio as it wont boot up!
See GRE-made Scanner Firmware Update <- DonS was the one who wrote the firmware and been MIA for several years now.

Vast majority of the time people sell em like that is they find out its not like the old scanners and can't figure out how to program trunking.

Excellent! I’m all set then!

Agreed. This young lady looked mid to late 20s.
She said she looked into it and preferred using scanner apps.

Ok. Fine by me, hand it over !!!!😂

It’s been chugging along just fine. My 2 SDS200s are doing all the hard work on the statewide P25-P2 simulcast system.
Thanks for all the info!

2.9 looks like I’m good!👍

Thank you everyone for your help and / or reply.

I settled on ARC500 Pro after wasting my time and money with Win500.😏

I use ARC500 also. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you. So far so good.

The only issue I’m having is a weird one.
On a few local channels using DPL tones, I am getting a pesky squelch tail. I have all the parameters correct. NFM mode, proper DPL, squelch type on menu DCS, squelch knob almost at 11o clock. I don’t get it. Could it be the individual department itself not sending a shut off code after the transmission? Because on my other scanners it does not do that. Am I missing something?

I have a RS 197 which I think is the same radio and on some VHF frequencies I had the same problem which I had to turn on the "ATT" something nearby was interfering with the frequency, usually the PL or DPL cures it and my squelch is set at about 11 o clock also...

The GRE's had the same issue. The "fix" is in the GRE forum somewhere, I did it years ago. It involves adjusting something in the expert settings. I'll see if I can dig it up.

I would appreciate it. I have everything set up correctly. And it’s doing it only on DPL toned frequencies not PL. Furthermore, it does it on some departments with DPL tones, not all of them.
Never had this problem. Then again, I have always been a Uniden scanner user since tones began being included in scanners. My BCT15X scanners don’t have these issues. But I like this scanner so I don’t want to ditch it over something like this. It’s got a lot of nice features.
