Good morning,

I found the NC department of Environmental Natural Resources and the Wildlife Resources Commission frequency. There are four locations and none are close to me. Im not even sure im in the right spot. To my understanding the NCWRC is using VIPER. I’d like to monitor game wardens and the park service. Could someone point me in the right direction?

Out-of-stater here so can't provide monitoring input. With that said, take a look at the Wildlife Resource & State Parks categories for applicable talkgroups listed in the RRDB in VIPER. Hope this helps. If you're looking for local input, reply back with your location and maybe someone can chime in with what may be monitorable for you & what site(s) to monitor

I’m brand new to this. I just bought an SDS100. It’s being delivered today and im trying load favorites lists and channels in them using sentinel. I’ll go through the link you posted. VIPER appears to be one big band? Or network ?I’ll figure it out 😂. Thank you!

VIPER is the statewide public safety system, most state agencies and many local and federal agencies (including USFS and USACE) also use the system. NCWRC uses the system a lot. It has hundreds of sites around the state with over 3000 talkgroups.

You will need to find the site or sites you are able to receive from your location, and program them in. The only traffic you will hear on a site is that which is affiliated to the site, this means that a radio is in the area and turned on, it is possible you will hear traffic temporarily from outside your area due to units passing through or visiting. I would urge you to read through the North Carolina VIPER sticky thread, it is packed with information on the system.

Sweet! Also thank you! I’ve got a LOT of learning to do. I found the WRC under state agencies but not Wildlife Resources Commission in VIPER.

If I were looking for an antenna specifically for scanning the NCWRC and the ncshp, what would I look at? A yagi? In what range? 800? 900mhz?

That depends where you live, but it should be in the 700 or 800 MHz range.

You're likely looking at the database from within Sentinel, which is logical. But you'll get more context of what you're looking at in Sentinel by looking at the RadioReference database on this site.

RRDB | North Carolina Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference This is a link to the NC database page. From here you can review state level agencies and services, and also drill down into County level pages. That will give you more information about your specific county and counties near to you.

North Carolina VIPER Trunking System, Varies, Multi-State This is a link to the NC VIPER database page. The top section lists all of the transmission sites, and you can sort this by county and drill down into the sites specifically near you. The Sites and Frequencies table has a menu that you can see a map of all site locations, which can give you a great idea of which sites are closest to you. This map may only be available to premium subscribers. The second section is the talkgroup groups. You can browse through these for more detail. They're basically sorted alphabetically by county, and then state agency below those.

Also, each database page has a link to the RadioReference wiki. The wiki contains other helpful information like agency maps and lists that can be helpful with understanding monitoring in your area. For example, there's a link to an NCSHP Troop Map that can help determine which Troop and District your county is in.

Hope this helps.

This one is advertised as 7-800 but the specs say different. Will it still pickup?

@brian gives some good advice. I would add to it that you may be putting the cart before the horse, find the sites you want to monitor near you first, probably the one below, based on your location in the post above, then try it with a regular antenna first, if you are still having issues then look for a better antenna.

Thank you both. I have a rubber duck 842 coming as well as a Tram 1410 discone and this one off of Amazon. I’m going to be using BNC connectors with RG8 cable. Not the best but it’s what I got. If one of the antennas don’t work, back to Amazon I goes lol. I’ll checkout the database and see what I get using the frequency and locations.

Thank you again!

One more question, I need to add the frequencies from the South Mills Location under VIPER in sentinel? Where does the frequency go? Under TGID or channel name? Or should it even be in viper?

Frequencies go into the sites of a trunked system such as VIPER. If programming manually using Sentinel, you need to add a site to the VIPER trunked system and then enter the frequencies into the site.

Alright. I did that, changed the filter to wide normal and set the P25 to NAC 1F0. Should I worry about band plan or location?

The South Mills site does not show a Site NAC in the database. Where did you get 1F0? A P25 trunked system automatically loads the band plan from the control channel. You don't need to worry about that. If you are only using one site for now, set Location Control to Off.

Thank you. I did add the “Troop A” (covers my county) TGID to frequency. Thanks for telling me about the NAC setting.

Thanks for telling me about the NAC setting.
If the wrong Site NAC is entered and the scanner is set to use Site NAC, the site will not be scanned. If you see a Site NAC flashing while you scan the site, that most likely the correct Site NAC and it has not been submitted to the database. If you do not have a GPS receiver for your scanner, location control will not do you much good. If you use a GPS, the latitude, longitude, and range values must be entered for each site.

If you’re in the South Mills area, recommend you put Pasqoutank and Currituck also in another location. The Pasquotank tower (ECity) is very busy plus it‘s affiliated with adjacent counties, the South Mills tower, not so much.
Good luck.

I’ll definitely check it out. I got some LMR-400 on the way.
