So I went to Pennsylvania last week for a funeral and my aunt had a scanner. I thought it was neat and I went and bought the same one that she had. However, now that I am home I am finding it difficult to find anything here in Wilson. I understand from this board that it is encrypted. My question then becomes what do local people listen to here? EMS, hospital, etc?

What scanner did you buy ?
I bought a Uniden BC365CRS
I'm completely out of my element and was figuring I could just plug it in and it would do whatever I wanted/needed it to do. I have been able to catch some Fire station stuff this morning from Elm City.. Perhaps it's a wilson County channel.
Here are some freqs you can progrm in. Wilson County, North Carolina (NC) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference You wont be able to program P25 phase1 freqs.
Here is manual so you can program.
@Meemz905 I think that scanner might be a little to outdated to listen to Wilson Fire as they are on a Trunked system, and you need a little more advanced scanner (more money) for that. Like @Whiskey3JMC said, you won't be able to hear police as they are encrypted.

Wilson so is on viper also. But they may still simulcast on vhf I'm not sure there but welcome to another addiction bud.
This is all so new to me. I'm not sure what Viper is or how to access it or how to access vhf. LOL I want this to be a hobby I just need to figure it out. I did hear them say our street light is out a bit ago and got ridiculously excited.

Haha well viper is a phase 1 soon to be phase 2 trunking system which is where you'll hear most of your traffic at. Vhf is simple analog radio which is what your radio will pickup
You’re going to need to return that scanner and upgrade to a more expensive one if you want to hear more.
I have a spending issue... or actually no issue spending LOL I just need someone to tell me what it is I need so I can buy it LOL
Is Viper a scanner or is it digial/online?

See this North Carolina VIPER (P25) for much more information. Bottom line is you are going to need a scanner that can receive a P25 system. I have a Uniden SD5200.
