To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I'm looking to set up my new G5, but admittedly am a complete novice when it comes to this. Is anyone available to join a Zoom call and walk me through it while I share my screen?

Where are you located, what exactly are you trying to monitor and have you downloaded the PPS from Unication? There's lots of help available here and it's better when we try and guide you thru it. You're already a premium subscriber so that's a huge plus!!

In the Baltimore area. Looking to add a few local agencies to scan and have it alert my volunteer station, as well as a marine radio on VHF. I downloaded the PPS and tried noodling through it a bit, but I am still pretty confused with it.

As I have posted in past it's kind of a waste to use on VHF marine. I do have some marine channels in mine plus the USCG P25 Net channel for my area. Don't really use this knob position to much, but it's available if needed. Plus VHF band in on the internal antenna, unless you the amplified charger with it's external antenna.

Best just use the G5 were it shines on P25 trunking.

You being a premium subscriber to this site you can just download the systems and talkgroups you wish to monitor in the PPS. You still need to do a few things with information you downloaded like adding withever talkgroups you want on each knob position.

Which County do you volunteer in? Do they have a VHF frequency they use for two tone paging.

I have around 30+ systems in G5 for 3 states I travel to in work truck. Mainly just South, but do go to Pennsylvania to see my dad.

Agreed, I have the G5's only due to occasionally changing zones when out and about for the weather channels, and one system I monitor when working in the Area still used VHF. At home I use a different device for VHF and use the G5 for the Simulcast systems I monitor.

Although I do occasionally go to MO, and when in the drop in charger, it gets the MOSWIN stuff pretty well.

Forgot to add hopefully you know the G5 can only scan one system at time. Either conventional frequencies or one trunked system with up to 64 talkgroups.

You should probably just start with youtube. There are several very good videos on there on how to program a G4/G5...

Tried that. Most are outdated and not current with the newest version of the PPS. I ended up more confused than I was before I watched them.

Most of the you tube videos do not show the current PPS being used however. While a little bit of knowledge makes it possible to adapt the older PPS to the newer ones, for a newby, I'm not sure how helpful those will actually be. I know there are a couple that use the current PPS but the really good detailed ones (at least that I found) are showing the older style PPS being used.
I think the OP is basically wanting someone to just use Zoom and program it for him while he perhaps watches but honestly, I'm not sure how much that will help him in the future. Truthfully he hasn't been very forthcoming with EXACTLY what he's needing which would help and even save time for anyone that might be willing to do this Zoom thing.

I've never programmed any to the tone alert stuff so I doubt I'd be much help anyway.

I’m def not looking for someone to do it for me. I’ve had a few people offer to program it for me but that’s not what I’m looking for. I’m looking for someone to teach me how to. With 30 years in the fire service, when someone comes to me and asks how to do something, I surely dont tell them to watch a YouTube video. I take the time to teach them.
I haven’t been cagey about what “exactly” im looking for. As I said earlier, I want to program a few local agencies (if that’s possible) and also set it to alert to my volley house.

"A few local agencies". Yep that's specific enough for me. As I said I have no experience with the alerts so couldn't help there. While I understand you tube is not the way, it's not the fire service, it's programming a voice pager. If you were local that would help too rather than Zoom. I did learn one time using some kind of Remote Desktop while a friend was on the phone watching me move the cursor and click some other radio programming. So anything is possible.

I wish you luck, I truly do but I can't be of any assistance with the tones/alerts. Not in my wheelhouse.

Hi - I didn't know how to program my new G5 when I purchased it. I had learned the old program on my previous unit. I found this gentleman on Youtube, FepLabs Radio, Jim Cane(sp?). You would need a premium subscription to RadioReference that would make programming your G5 a lot easier. He uses the new PPS software. This video helped me get over the learning curve to successfully create my first program and load it on my G5. Once I did that I was able to do it again without any problem. I know you don't like to watch a video to learn, but please give this one a try, it was very ,very helpful. I don't use tones so I can't help you in that department. However, a person who has helped me more times than I can count, who could teach a class in my opinion, is RaleighGuy. You could try reaching out to him once you get your initial program successfully loaded.
The video link is:
Good luck in your endeavor.

Like @K9KLC I can't help with alert tones, as I do not use them, but here are the super basic steps to get you started. Start with this and ask questions from here and someone will help.

Tab C1 Top Right IMPORT FROM RR...Import systems you want, for now include all TGs to make it easier later. Repeat this step for each system.

Tab E If new select read from device and then edit after, if not select profile and then the edit button

Tab E2 Click ADD then ADD SYSTEM FROM RESOURCES, select each system you want from resources

Tab E4 Create profiles, just select each profile type to be added (NOTE if DMR create two DMR profiles one for slot 1 & one for slot 2)

Tab E7 select zone and knob, add system as TG-SCAN, you can add 64 TGs per knob unless you add wildcard 65535 then it is 63 max
